Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

At a book-signing event at Portland, I was fortunate enough to be placed between the author of PLRBoS and Terence McKenna. TM was interesting to talk with, but he obviously had much on his mind because it was elsewhere, dimensionally speaking... but that day was my introduction to Portland's little red book of stairs. As a former carpenter for umpteen years, I know a little about the concept of incremental altitude and architecture, but never enough about Portland. This book, a metaphorical climbing lesson into the highs and lows of the Rose City. You can go up a set of stairs, or down, or simply sit down halfway up and smoke a cigarette. You can stand at the top or bottom and just stare at stairs. You can count them. Above all, you can seek out all the stairs in Portland, beginning with every one of them in this book. Bring the book along. You'll shed pounds. I would recommend it as a holiday gift for every person on your list who loves Portland. The author is a fascinating person in person, and reading her book is like finding a lost world literally under your feet. I do not remember what Mr. McKenna gave me, or what happened after I took it, but it was certainly life-changing. I do recall most of the lovely conversation with the author of Portland's Little Red Book of Stairs, and as this book helped me leave my former uber-rustic life to journey into the fleshpots of Portland and explore, PLRBoS was also transformational.
