Schaeffer is a brilliant writer of both fiction and non-fiction. He should be considered a key chronicler of contemporary American social history. While his non-fiction Crazy for God is an autobiography with far ranging historical implications, the slim novel Portofino is a charming and thinly veiled account of the author's experience coming of age.
