4 stars because it is on type. Love those swashbucklers. I was amazed when I saw the original date of publication (1894 !) because of the ease of the text. make no mistake, this is light fare, but it is fun. If you are looking for high prose...well look somewhere else, this is not Dumas. The story is of the "twins of a different mother" variety- say, Prince and the Pauper, or Double Star. It is set in some Austrian or German Principality sometime near the Napoleanic wars . The hero is a ne'er do well Englishman, and the story is easily recognized to any fan of westerns, science fiction pulp. Enjoy it as a little bit of puff, or as a lesson in continuuity. A pulp from 1894! I love that!
