This account of American early history takes my breath away. Yes, I'm a product of '50s public school textbook learning and nothing in my introduction to American history came close to these consistent horrendous accounts of American explorers/residents/citizens from the early colonists up through the statehood of California. Why doesn't this book get a 5 from me? Because there is not one reference to any of Prof. Diener's assertions--which involve incredible detail about early settlers' greed, founding fathers' and Presidential incompetence and greed, and the general insensitive and greedy character of the American populace from the git-go. Oh, wait...I think there was one footnote. What to do with a read like this? It seems credible, but the trouble is, you cannot share this kind of thing with anyone who has any knowledge of academic research integrity--because there are no cites or documentation for anything herein! The amazing thing about the accounts provided by now (retired) "happiness-researcher" Diener is how the current (2000 >>>) administration can no longer be assumed to be the worst--or even an anomaly, given Diener's accounts. This is a good-bad book on almost all counts.
