Synopses & Reviews
Scottish Clans and Tartans comprises the histories of 148 Scottisnames and illustrations of Scotland's best-known tartans.
The names included in the book were chosen because of the importance of their holders' place in the social history of Scotland. Because of this there are names such as Anstruther, Currie, Dewar, Turnbull for which no tartan has been created. Other clan and family names may have several tartans, and although not all of them are illustrated here, the 150 clan, dress and hunting tartans that are included make this book one of the mose comprehensive tartan handbooks available today.
Synopsis
Ian Grimble's great knowledge of Gaelic history and literature adds richness to his account of the important events of Scottish history, as they were reflected in the lives of individual clans and families. Clan feuds, border skirmishes, the tragedies of Culloden and the Highland Clearances, deaths and murders of kings and queens, lords and chiefs, are set against a background of a way of life which, though often hard, found expression in great cultural richness.
