This book is a mix of truly insightful approaches to directing, with a lot of practical hands-on advice and some obvious and somewhat outdated ideas of how to direct a play. There is no acknowledgment of the creative process outside of the traditional playwright, director, actor model. Ball's theatrical world is an orderly one where everyone knows his/her place and is not particularly prone to the messiness of true collaboration. Overall, I am appreciative of his passion and love of directing and I am happy to be reminded that the most important thing is to find the beauty in the work.
