This book was a gift from a friend who knows I like mysteries. The 1920s was such an interesting era in America, and this book takes place in Florida of all places! It is a true crime story about a woman criminal - rare for the time - who cooks up a scheme that had to be true - truth is always stranger than fiction. As a reporter begins to suspect something is rotten in West Palm Beach, she befriends the odd postmistress of the town. The story gets more intense as it builds towards the big shoe drop, which I did not see coming. You are led along thinking the crime is something else...then BANG - literally!
Has some funny moments along the way, like about a character's cigarettes and the narrator's sidekicks. The last few chapters tie it together by propelling the characters forward in time - nicely done! I even Googled the story to see if really happened...and it did!
Get this most unusual book if you love a good mystery, with a little bit of the occult and supernatural sprinkled in!
