Publisher Comments

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an epic novel of love and heroism and hope, set against the backdrop of one of America's most defining eras — the Great Depression.

Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance.

In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli--like so many of her neighbors — must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

Review

"[An] emotionally charged epic....[O]utstanding....The storytelling is propulsive....Hannah is a consistent best-seller, and this sharply relevant tale of a past catastrophic time will exert a particularly strong magnetic force." Booklist (Starred Review)

Review

"[A] riveting story of love, courage, and sacrifice....In Elsa, a woman who fiercely defends her principles and those she loves, Hannah brilliantly revives the ghost of Tom Joad." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

Review

"For devoted Hannah fans in search of a good cry." Kirkus Reviews

I wasn't forwarned, but smart enough to get this book from the local library. All it is is juvenile romance fiction. It's quite corny. I was skipping paragraphs and then entire pages by the third chapter. I'd call it "offensively stupid" if it weren't for the fact that some people actually like this kind of drivel. For the record, I'm a 68 year-old retired lineman, definitely not in the target market. Still, it's a sobering disappointment to think that this stuff makes big bucks on the best seller lists. There's so much great literature out there it makes my head spin, and it's not hard to find. The best thing about this book was the bike ride to and from the library. bp

This book is about the depression years. Even during the depression, Elsa's indomitable spirit shines through. I waited and waited for a happy ending but alas since the book is based on true events I had to wait for the epilogue for some semblance of happiness. The book could have been shorter but otherwise a well-written book.
