Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. This is a magical book--you'll never look at any city in same way after reading this book. Helprin writes in poetic prose, using some of the most unusual images I've encountered. New York City is the setting for the story. The sweep is epic, from the late 1890's to the late 1990's, and the characters are equally epic as are their actions: quests, love, despair, cruelty. One character is on a journey to discover perfection: "For what can be imagined more beautiful than the sight of a perfectly just city rejoicing in justice alone." If books be food, this is a banquet.
