Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: June 2022 (0 comment)
June is one of my favorite months, especially here in Portland, where the weather can be beautiful and sunny one minute and a gray downpour with threats of thunder the next. It’s important to always be prepared to take advantage of those rainy afternoons, with a good mug of tea and a great book. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the books in translation released this past month....

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER
FROM THE AUTHOR OF IN A DARK, DARK WOOD

Featured in TheSkimm
An Entertainment Weekly "Summer Must List" Pick
A New York Post "Summer Must-Read" Pick
Included in Summer Book Guides from Bustle, Oprah.com, PureWow, and USA TODAY

From New York Times bestselling author of the "twisty-mystery" (Vulture) novel In a Dark, Dark Wood, comes The Woman in Cabin 10, an equally suspenseful and haunting novel from Ruth Ware — this time, set at sea.

In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for — and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…

With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10 — one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.

About the Author

Ruth Ware grew up in Sussex, on the south coast of England. After graduating from Manchester University she moved to Paris, before settling in North London. She has worked as a waitress, a bookseller, a teacher of English as a foreign language and a press officer, and is The New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game. Her latest book is The Death of Mrs. Westaway. She is married with two small children.

The unreliable narrator in this novel might be a pain, but she’s sure she saw something, and somehow the author makes the reader sure she’s not lying. Still, nobody on board this small ship believes her. What she saw is impossible. And the reader’s left to race against time (and pages) to work out what happened. Meanwhile there are snippets of aftermath to intrigue or dismay. Told along two time-lines, with one compelling point of view, and one disappearing stranger, the Woman in Cabin 10 is mystery and thriller combined, by turns scary and odd, until the reader works out what must have happened and begins to dread what consequences may come. It’s a fun, fast read; just mysterious enough to be compelling, just dark enough to thrill, and with just enough detail to convince the reader there will be an answer coming soon. An easy, dark, fun read. Just don't take it too seriously. Disclosure: I was given it as a gift.

This book sucked me in at the beginning and didn't spit me back out until the end. I questioned everyone and everything in this book. I thought I had it all figured out ...I was not even close! A great read!

I need some therapy now for Ruth Ware has now locked me inside a cabin deep in Kielder Forest with some nut job with an axe to grind and now trapped me on a cruise with a missing body and a sick murderer trying to stop me finding out what the hell is going on. The whole locked mystery aspect to this novel is just fantastic. I loved Ruth’s first book but here the tension just ricochets. It was stomach turning at time and so realistic that I’m not sure if it was the action of the waves or the tension in the novel which was the most effective. Novels with so many limitations in geography and characters must be challenging to write but this one was clever. I was drawn in from the first page and every word seemed there to torment and heckle. The North Sea, angry and noisy was the background to the whole affair and the darkness and sense of urgency made this novel really intense and creepy. I would be scared to go on any kind of holiday with Ruth Ware after these two novels I have to say. I particularly liked the way in which Lo’s story unfolded as her boyfriend back on dry land tried to find out where she was and then mourned her death. But she’s still alive! I shouted. But he had proof didn’t he? This novel messes with your head and takes you on a cruise that you will never forget. A locked murder mystery in a boat? The plot twists and turns, churns you up and spits you out in its wake. A brilliantly intense and claustrophobic read

I loved this book! Lo Blacklock is a travel writer able to go on a luxury yacht cruise before it is available for the public to sail on it. She briefly talks with a woman in the cabin next to her, and then wakes up in the middle of the night sure she heard a scream and what sounds like a body being dumped into the ocean. The cabin next to hers is empty. No one on the ship has seen the woman she saw in the cabin earlier and no one is staying in that cabin. I loved how I did not know what to believe while reading it. Lo is a great character who deals with panic attacks and post traumatic stress, while also heavily drinking to get her through what she thinks she experienced, but she is not completely sure. Is she a reliable narrator or is there a bigger conspiracy at work? Whenever I would have a guess of what was really going on, something would throw me for a loop. I never figured out what was really happening until it was revealed, but it made sense. I did like how she was slowly piecing things together, even though no one believed her and she was trapped on a ship. It's a good thing I am not scared about being trapped aboard cruise ships since if I had the slightest bit of fear about it, this book would terrify me.

Now I’ve read another of these selections, THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10. I’m afraid it’s just so-so, no great shakes. But others disagree with me. Many reviewers say that THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10 is better than Ruth Ware’s last book, IN A DARK, DARK WOOD. That is true if you don’t count the first two thirds of CABIN 10. The last third of that book is, indeed, nailbiting. And that is good enough for most reviewer’s, I guess. All in all, though, I would say that CABIN 10 is about average. If the entire book was as good as the last third, I would give it a four out of five. I am disappointed. A journalist is spending the week on a new cruise ship in order to review it for the travel magazine she works for. She believes that the woman next door, in cabin 10, has been murdered and makes lots of trouble for herself when she insists on pursuing what she believes to be true. It’s not a bad premise, so I expected more than this book came up with.
