Synopsis
Mental health professionals are increasingly being used as consultants on custody issues, both before the divorce and after. Whether being called a Special Master, a Guardian ad litem (GAL), a Special Advocate, a Representative for the Child, or a Parenting Coordinator, work with high-conflict post-divorce couples requires a special type of knowledge, a special type of personal stamina, and a special type of conceptualization of the dynamics and the issues. This book defines the dynamics of high conflict and identifies the professional skills necessary to be of assistance. It also asks the mental health professional to define exactly what kind of services they will be providing, and offers sample contracts and protocols to help get started. It is based on the authors' experience in dealing with high-conflict couples and talks with others in the field.
