We’ve been looking for an excuse for quite a while to shine a spotlight on Portland’s oldest, most unconventional indie publisher. Well, friends, the time has come. Microcosm is celebrating its 20th anniversary!
Founded by Joe Biel in his bedroom in 1996, Microcosm quickly established itself as a go-to source for books and bookettes on DIY skills, food, bicycling, gender, self-care, and social justice. If that’s not enough to pique your interest, consider this: Microcosm doubles the industry standard in its number of women authors, and its books are printed on post-consumer recycled paper.
We’ve gathered together some representative titles to get you on your way to becoming a Microcosm devotee. Here’s to 20 years of truly innovative indie publishing!
