That is awesome, Dave, you lucky devil!! The decline of serious, useful labor...I think you are making some pretty big assumptions about what I do at work :) These days, open-heart patients practically recover themselves...usually, they just wake up and want to know what the heck is goin' on over there at Powell's?!

Aw, thanks, both of you. Denise, to answer your question, I went to school for many years in programs that taught me how to distract people away from serious, useful labor. (First, by distracting *me* away from serious, useful labor.) My teachers would be thrilled to know that I'm successfully contributing to the decline of productivity in American workplaces; perhaps I'll pass along your comment. If you want to get specific: BA in Lit, MFA in Fiction, one year working for a Citysearch-like web site that no longer exists... and then, in 1998, I answered an ad in the Oregonian when Powell's was looking to hire the first non-technical employee of Powells.com.

Thanks, Adrienne!! Something to do at work tonight...well, aside from that whole patient care thing...(again, teeheehee, just a little nursey humor) But, it's funny cuz it's true. Dang it, stop it, Denise...people are gonna think you don't care...oh God, that is funny too!

I have been looking forward to reading "Reliable Wife". Dave's interviews are great. Check out the interview Dave did with David Grann. I also love Jill's interviews.

Dave, Very interesting and entertaining interview! I love it when you come up with questions like, "Suppose you're in a bookstore next month, and you see someone at the register buying your book. In your ideal world, what else would they be buying? What would please you? And you're not allowed to say your memoir." I like to look up your chats with authors when I am supposed to be saving lives and stamping out disease on nightshift...of course, sometimes a patient will be so rude as to put on their call light (it's a joke, folks) causing me to go into "I-am-trying-to-read-here interrupticus." Any-who, just wondering what sort of degree you have and how you got the most awesome job in the world? Share with the group, if possible.
