‘Twas the Blursday before Christmas
(Or was it… July?)
The days were all shorter
We didn’t know why
See, we’d hung up our lights
Several seasons ago
To cheer ourselves up
In a year full of woe
Exhausted by Zooming
And with no sense of time
Alarmed by the increase
In Amazon Prime
We ordered from food carts
And tried to shop local
Urged our neighbors to do so
On this we were vocal:
Together we’re strong
Even when we’re apart
Beneath masks, gloves, and shields
We all have a heart
Thank you, nurses and doctors
Parents and teachers
Grocery store workers
All our little fur creatures
Children, for resilience
Customers too
Friends, for the love
We’re indebted to you
So, as you hang stockings
And sing carols like larks
Or put out the cookies
For St. Nicholas (Sparks)
Please know —
Lonely or happy
Rich or with zero
To each of us here
You are a hero.
