Intruiging all the way through! perfect balance of thought provoking story line and interesting sociological and human behaviour perspectives...such a challenging way to live, very thought provoking.

A gripping insight into the Mormon philosophy of polygamy. I came away with a greater understanding of what polygamy entails, and some sympathy for the "Lonely Polygamist" in this book.

loved this book from the moment i started it. poor golden, trying soo hard to keep everyone happy, fed, and most importantly, attention. I loved all the kids, especially Rusty, who just wanted to have a stake party for his 12th bday and not share it with his father. Also all the wives and how they where trying to vie for his attention as well. and all the secrets, that golden has to hide from the wives from his new job site to univited guest at the end. A great story about a father of 20+ kids who is trying to keep his head above from sinking and keep everyone happy. An interesting and amusing look into the world of mondern day polygamy with an twists all along the way and a bittersweet ending that will have you cheering for this family. a must read in my book!!

This is a compelling read about family life, only this family consists of four wives and twenty eight children. We get to follow the ups and downs, revelations and frustrations of this family, which winds up being like any other family. Closely drawn characters reel you in and it winds up being a true page turner. Highly recommended.

I must admit that I'd recieved this book as an Indiespensible offering I'd signed up for and then put it on the back burner of books on my shelf. It seemed such a heavy topic to automatically delve into. Then, a few months later, delve I did and oh Wow. Poor Golden, I thought and continued to think throughout, about the main character. I kept looking at the author's photo at the end of the book and wondering if he had actually experienced having multiple wives and children. Udall does an amazing job of drawing the reader in from multiple points of view, from the Father to the Wives to the poor sad son, who nonetheless turns out to be one of the best characters. I am still not sure what I think about the ending of this story, but I do know that it was an amazing ride and I'm glad I stuck it out.
