by
Julie Fogliano

For those of us who are ready for spring the day after Christmas, this book reminds kids (and adults) that we have to wait...and wait...and wait. But suddenly...it's spring! A child and whomoever is reading this book to the child, will love the whimsical art and surprises on each page.

Nurture Shock: New Thinking About Children
by
Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman

Not only was this the best book I read in 2012, but probably the past 5 years! I've never had a book absolutely change what I was doing so immediately. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has children.

Once Upon An Island
by
David Conover

, January 01, 2012
It's always good to read a book that takes you back to a simpler time, when living off the land was a much easier idea to think about then it is now. Despite this couple's hardships, surviving a year on an island with next to nothing inspired me to think about more ways to make or use what I already have, rather than running to the closest department store to pick up something new.

Once Upon An Island
by
David Conover
deanna.knoll
, September 27, 2011
In the midst of our technology driven lives, it was great to read a book chronicling a couple who decided to give up city life and live simply. That's not a rare theme these days, but this book was written in the 1960's when most everyone wanted the chance to leave the country and take up city life. David and Jeanne Conover rid themselves of anything not considered essential to buy themselves an island and turn it into a resort. This short read describes the self sufficiency, stubbornness, joy and ingenuity of two determined people who fell in love with an island together.

One Square Inch Of Silence

Gordon Hempton

While every book I read changes me in some way, this book completely gave me a makeover! It made me really think about my priorities when choosing a place to live, vacation and spend my time in general. Silence is becoming a rarity for most of us--read this book and have it change you, too!

Speckled People A Memoir of a Half Irish Childhood
by
Hugo Hamilton
deanna.knoll
, March 06, 2007
The author's word pictures are so unique. Describing his mother's baking as a love letter sealed with air-kisses made me want the cake and the love letter! He artfully combines his childhood with his mother's WWII Germany experiences in an easy to read manner.
