Victoria

I have been watching the PBS series by the same name and was curious about this spunky little 18 year old who was ruling half the globe. While she is odd and who among us isn't a little quirky at times at 18. She lived, loved pasionately, hated just as passionately and was incredibly curious about the world around her. If you read this with "the eyes of the time" you'll be amazed at how restrictive royal life at court could be. There were so many rituals that had been continued for centuries just because that's how it was always done. Prince Albert certainly played a part in this breath of fresh air sweeping through the palace hallways. She realized he was eager to be her partner in love, life and family not just in name only. Together they made some important contributions. The social mores of the day dictated every aspect of Victorian life some practical and some just silly like tablecloths must reach the floor because young men might be stimulated by the sight of the exposed table legs. They might appear too much like the legs of a young woman and cause the young gentleman to become overly excited. But all of that aside this is an open look at Queen Victoria and her life's accomplishments.

Origins Reconsidered In Search Of What
by
Richard Leakey
frenchcafegirl
, August 10, 2017
The name Leakey brings to mind images of the desert, sand, archeological digs, Lucy the Cro Magnon woman and such. Unfortunately for the readers non of that is here. The book does revisit important studies and research from the past 20 years or so. So while it is informative its not nearly as exciting as some earlier works including those of his father Dr.Louis Leakey. I must admit to having a crush on Dr. Richard while in high school and proudly told my father I would marry an archaeologist and live in the desert. He laughed and said your better off reading about this. Its 120 degrees in the African sun and you can only be out in the sun in our backyard for 15 minutes. Of course he was right and this book is an important interesting read just not as glamorous as earlier works.

All the Presidents Men
by
Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward
frenchcafegirl
, August 03, 2017
With all the talk these days of secret meetings, covert phone calls and election meddling it brought to mind this book. June 17, 1972 on an ordinary Saturday Bob Woodward, a reporter for the Washington Post received a phone call from his editor. 5 men were arrested for burglary at the Democratic headquarters. With that one phone a chain of events put into motion a series of actions that would alter Americans view of public figures, newspaper reporting styles and how millions of americans viewed our political system. As a brand new voter I was shocked at the stories that played out in the headlines. Then when this book was published I couldn't believe what I was reading. Growing up in a household where Bobby Kennedy was revered like a god I kept thinking if he was alive this would never have happened. When Mrs John Mitchells plane crashed and gossip said it was a plot to keep her from talking I still was unconvinced. This could never happen here not in America. Recently I rewatched the movie and I now have a new, fresh view of all of this. So of course I had to read the book again. This is one of the finest works of investigative reporting we will ever see. There are lots and lots of details and it seems so exciting when they are clueing in on the list and you think this is a great story and oh my gosh it just happens to be true. Every student should be required to read this. Especially now that we know that Deep Throat was from the FBI!!!

The Girl on the Train
by
Paula Hawkins
frenchcafegirl
, July 14, 2017
We've all had those moments when we were traveling where something in the window catches our eye for a brief moment in time. Sometime it causes a double take because what we think we saw seems unbelieveable. The central character in this story has such a moment. Each day she passes a house whose occupants seem to have that idyllic romantic passion we all dream of. But one day the beautiful story she's fantasized about the occupants begins to unravel. A woman is missing and then found murdered. Our train commuter is so upset that she is drawn into the investigation by her need to know more and more until she herself is considered "a person of interest". Seems all was not as perfect in the home as she imagined. This is an easy read not challenging but certainly thought provoking.

Italian Secretary A Further Adventure of Sherlock Holmes
by
Caleb Carr
frenchcafegirl
, June 29, 2017
We are familiar with Caleb Carr and his "Alienist" stories of the beginnings of criminology in New York's Police Department. This however is a well written tale of Holmes and Watson and their adventure in Scotland's Holyrood Castle. Holyrood is well know for it's importance in the story of Mary Queen of Scots and the murder of her secretary David Rizzio, hence the title. This is fun adventure and an entertaining read. We don't really learn anything new about our 2 sleuths but the location adds a spooky what if the Castle is haunted supposition to the story. This is not as serious as some of Carr's other works but its entertaining none the less.

Accidental Empress
by
Allison Pataki
frenchcafegirl
, June 23, 2017
Its 1853 and 15 year old Elizabeth the Duchess of Bavaria goes to the Hapsburg court with her older sister who is betrothed to Emperor Franz Joseph. At the last minute the Emperor backs out and confesses his love for the younger sister. This is the stuff soap operas are known for except that this is real life. The biography is well written and gives us an inciteful view of political drama and intrigue. This is no surprise since the author Allison Pataki is the daughter of former New York Governor George Pataki.

Athenais The Life Of Louis Xivs Mistress
by
Lisa Hilton
frenchcafegirl
, June 21, 2017
Athenais de Montespan was the "official" mistress of King Louis XIV of France. Behind closed doors she was referred to as the "Real Queen of France". This biography by Lisa Hilton is fun, factual and informative about life at court during the reign of the monarch known as the "Sun King". While she was undoubtedly beautiful and charming, Athenais was also witty and manipulative when she wanted something. She helped to transform King Louis from a shy teen to a regal monarch and man. She inspired plays by well known authors of the day. Lisa Hilton is brilliant and gives us insight into life at this time of fashion, Moliere, artistic expression. But not all of this story is fluff. There was a scandal involving a poisonous plot and Athenais was implicated and fell from King Louis XIV inner circle. While she was guilty of making some bad decisions in relationships outside of court, many agree she had a lifelong effect on the young king and his court.

I first read this on the plane to paris years ago. What a treat I couldn't put it down. This subject has been covered in a multitude of ways in print and on film. This is a different take in that it involves the British government, the Royal family and a plot involving everyone. The author does a lovely job of reinventing Holmes and Watson's relationship. It also puts a new spin on the plot involving the "Royals". Be sure to give yourself some free time because once you start you'll not want to stop.

We've all watched the great film but this book deserves to be read again and again. Over the years I've reread this and each time I take away something new. Its a great fiction based on fact story. The characters are rich and real but sympathetic and sad. Doctorow is an excellent storyteller and makes real events from history come alive.

I recently watched Mr.Nance on the Bill Mahr show. He is smart, and spent years in the "spy departments " of the US Government. It made me curious to learn more about him. Little did I know my curiosity would lead me to discover a new genre. This book is informative, smart, all to easy to understand and will certainly owley"piss you off"(can I say that here) I hope so because as my knowledge and awareness increased so did my level of frustration with the middle east. Mr Nance is a great storyteller. Be forewarned though you will be affected............

Missing 411 Eastern United States
by
David Paulides
frenchcafegirl
, August 25, 2016
Even though this is currently unavailable it is still worth a mention. This version is dedicated to the cases in the Eastern United States. Many local libraries won't stock Paulides books so you may have to hunt for a copy. Trust me it's worth the effort. I have hiked and camped in the northwest all my so I know there are lots of "tales" being told around the campfire of those who hike out for the day and don't return. But the cases David Paulides covers are real, documented missing person investigations. These are eerie stories of children and adults who vanish in our national parks and campgrounds. Local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies investigate these cases thoroughly and completely but rarely find the missing. Even odder are the stories of children who are missing and show up miles away. There are often signs the child has been fed, redressed and sometimes groomed with no memory of where they have been. Paulides has formed and organization and frequently does speaking engagements, pod casts and radio interviews.

Death on Blackheath
by
Anne Perry
frenchcafegirl
, August 14, 2015
This is another in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series. Over the years these have become somewhat predictable but they are still a fun read, kind of like a time travel adventure. Perry does a great job of capturing what life in Edwardian England was like. In this story Thomas is now part of Special Branch and handles sensitive high profile cases only. he is suddenly ordered to investigate two minor incidents: the blood, hair, and shards of glass discovered outside the home of naval weapons expert Dudley Kynaston, and the simultaneous disappearance of Mrs. Kynaston’s beautiful lady’s maid. It soon appears that these two unrelated incidents are actually part of a much bigger plot.

This is a great compilation of tales of New Orleans. Like the subtitle says it has sex, jazz and yes even murder. i think this would make a great choice for a book club round table. This ancient city has always been the center of struggle for power, a place where one can make a dream come true or experience your worst nightmare. Many of the stories in this book are like the scene of an accident, horrible but we can't help but look. At one time this was the murder capital of the United States. Since Katrina those who love this ,city even though we may not actually live there, have tried to make a difference in its future.

Working with You Is Killing Me Freeing Yourself from Emotional Traps at Work
by
Katherine Crowley
frenchcafegirl
, August 12, 2015
I don't want to quit my job; I want to quit my manager (or coworker). If this statement normal, then this book is exactly what you need. The authors call the experience of being caught in an emotionally distressing situation at work being hooked, and they provide tools to unhook physically, mentally, and emotionally. They define some of the roles that we play, such as hero, caretaker, rebel, martyr, peacemaker, or entertainer. As I was reading I found myself taking notes and wishing I could write in the margin so I bought a used copy. I wish I'd had this book before I left my fun job with the not so fun manager.

But there are useful chapters to help us new business owners avoid some common pitfalls. It also contains some references to other books that I found helpful. I bought a used copy to keep for a reference manual.

Hissing Cousins The Untold Story of Eleanor Roosevelt & Alice Roosevelt Longworth

, August 05, 2015
This is the untold stories of the tempestuous relationship between Alice and Eleanor Roosevelt. Although there is a familial relationship between them each was critical of the other, often to the point of public displays of emotion. This biography is packed with stories both short and long of what really goes on in Washington DC. I must admit although I did not know to much about their relationship I could not put this down. The author gives the reader little know stories and anecdotes not shared with the public until now.

Alice is the brilliant but precocious daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt. Alice was a girl way ahead of her peers. She was smart, well educated and not afraid to speak her mind. Unafraid of what people thought of her she lived her life on the political stage and in the public eye. She was in fact a sort of female version of her father. This new biography gives new insight to how Alice was a trailblazer and role model for other young women.

But hindsight as they say is 20/20. Carr wants to come across as a cool gangsta but he seems fake and almost pathetic.

Monster Of Florence
by
Douglas Preston
frenchcafegirl
, July 08, 2015
Douglas Preston is well known for his historical, mystery thrillers. He writes with Lincoln Child featuring a character called Pendergast. Mario Spezi is a highly regarded Italian journalist. He has covered a number of famous investigations and court cases. Douglas Preston moved his family to Florence Italy and satisfied a lifelong dream. In doing so he landed right in the middle of one of the most notorious and baffling serial murders. One of the killings occurred right next to his new family home. The Monster of Florence as he is known is responsible for killing a series of pairs of young lovers. Spezi has been actively following this case since 1968 when the first victims were discovered. Preston became friends with Spezi and naturally the conversation turned to the murders which have been on the minds of local residents. To date there are 8 couples murdered in the small towns surrounding Florence Italy. There have been many investigations and a lot of conversation but no real solutions to these deaths. At one point local authorities consider Preston and Spezi as suspects because they are too interested in the deaths and seem to have to much knowledge ??? This is a fascinating read because of the unusual subject but also because of the insight they give into the Italian law enforcement.

The Hooblers tell the tale of the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre and all the various suspects such as millionaire JP Morgan. Even the painter Picasso was considered suspicious. Twilight Years Paris In The 1930s
by
William Wiser
frenchcafegirl
, August 13, 2014
Paris in the 1930's has a magical allure, as this lavishly illustrated chronicle of a fascinating decade in the city's cultural history shows. the frequented galleries, palaces, shops and cafes are really the stars here. there are stories of Henry Miller, Helena Rubinstein, Anais Nin, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali and others from the twenties like Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, and Man Ray. Jazz ruled the city at night surrealism flourished, haute couture was the new art form. Josephine Baker danced and Hemingway drank and wrote. The text is accompanied by a selection of black/white photographs. the literary luminaries are too numerous to list here though many claim the ten years that the books covers are considered some of the most important with the creative revolution of the expatriate era in Paris.

this is a sequel to Leo's first book misadventures from funny women on the road. while it's geared towards women, i think a lot of guys would think this is funny too. there are a couple of celebrity short stories such as Cindy the writer from sex in the city and her not mile high club fiasco. a lot of us have experienced (mis)adventures while traveling and these are real life experiences of the funniest kind. it will make you laugh and also be relived that the story you've read was not your vacation tale. this book would make a fun bon voyage gift for someone.

Locked Rooms

This is another adventure in Ms Kings series of Sherlock Holmes and his wife (yes) Mary Russell. In this volume they are on their way back to England from Asia and decide to make a stop in San Francisco so Mary can settle some affairs related to her deceased family's finances. Though she has only distant memories from early childhood, Mary has dreams/nightmares almost as soon as their ship leaves Hawaii. Once they are back in the city by the bay she realizes the connection between her parents death and her feelings that she is somehow to blame for their deaths. Ms King gives us some fun characters, insightful local history and even throws in Dashiell Hammett (much to our delight). The earthquake and resulting fire that nearly destroyed the entire city looms at the fringes of all that happens. Holmes delves into the deaths of his wife's family with his usual energy and even hires Hammett to do local research. There's a SF version of the baker street boys to do his legwork. All in all it's a predictable read but tons of fun. Mary is much younger than Holmes and very much his pupil but is quickly rising to be Holmes equal partner.

Walks Through Lost Paris A Journey Into the Heart of Historic Paris
by
Leonard Pitt

, August 12, 2014
the author was living in Paris and found out the city was revamped in the mid 1800's as part of an urban renewal to modernize the streets and transportation in and around Paris. napoleon III was in charge and he selected baron haussman as the new prefect of Paris. he was a great organizer and also a great leader who would be tough enough to stand up to the set in their ways Parisians. with his appointment came awesome power. this would be no easy task. most of the streets and walkways were hundreds of years old, some were unpaved still and on some the addresses were out of order or wrong. slowly and surely the baron left his mark on the city. unfortunately a casualty of this fine work were the small unique streets and neighborhoods that were demolished or revamped. this book searches out those areas of the city and the author give us photos and unusual stories about these bygone roadways. this would be a great book to give as a gift for someone who has been to Paris, loves the city, knows it well and is now going back. there are love stories, tragedy and places of historical significance.

Interpretation Of Murder

this story is set in new york 1909. Freud and Jung are on the forefront internationally with their famous psychoanalysis practices. They disembark from their steamship only to become embroiled in a sex/murder/assault incident that involves the pretty young heiress on one of new yorks richest and finest. ostensibly they are here for a speaking tour and Jung is scheduled to receive an award for his research work. a young budding profiler named Younger. he also comes from a prominent family and is assigned to escort the doctors while in the us on their tour. needless to say they are drawn into the investigation when the heiress who was attacked claims she has no memory of the event inspite of many wounds located in private areas of her body. Younger tries to draw her out and encourages her to speak about the event but seems unable to retrieve anything useful.Younger becomes smitten with the pretty young damsel in distress and tries to investigate her family and close friends. they quickly close ranks and refuse to discuss anything with him. dr Freud comes under attack for his beliefs in human sexuality and quickly is disenchanted with Americans and their life style. all in all this is a really fun read, in some ways it is very similar to Caleb Carr's the Alienist only the central theme is more psychological than crime scene related. the ensemble includes many well know public figures and the city of new york plays a key part as well. the bridges the city is famous for are being built and there are subplots involving the working conditions for laborers in 1909.

The Murder Room: The Heirs of Sherlock Holmes Gather to Solve the World's Most Perplexing Cold Cases

This is an insightful look into the work of the Vidocq society, the work they do, history of the society itself and who makes up this team of "sleuths". This was a fascinating read right from the intro where the profiler discloses why he refuses to shake the hand of the priest he's going to interview". To shake the hand would be to acknowledge his power, his existence." The profiler goes on to describe how he alters his physical appearance and manner to take power/control away from his subject. All this on pages 2 and 3. Its a great look at how criminology and how a criminologist works have changed with the passage of time. I guarantee you will think of this book in days, weeks to come. Michael Capuzzo has written for the Miami Herald and other news agencies. He is adept at giving us lots to think about in a few words.

Murder in Hollywood: Solving a Silent Screen Mystery
by
Charles Higham
frenchcafegirl
, August 05, 2014
The author, a veteran Hollywood biographer (Cary Grant, Marlon Brando), claims to have solved the murder of silent film director William Desmond Taylor,While this is a fun read, it really is only a melodramatic rehash of King Vidors book on the same subject, and sheds a dim light on the mystery. In 1907, Taylor, an Irish immigrant, left his wife and daughter in New York City and years later shows up as an actor/ director in the silent film community of Hollywood. Attractive and intelligent, Taylor had many affairs with both men and women. Moist notable of these is George Hopkins an award winning set designer. On the night of February 1, 1922, Taylor was shot and killed at his home. According to Higham, the murderer was actress Mary Miles Minter, who harbored an unrequited love for Taylor. He has based his theory on research documents from the 60's and 70's given to him by director King Vidor. Minter's lack of an alibi for the time of the murder, and complicated political relationships alluding to corruption involving her mother charlotte shelby, which, according to the author, motivated the district attorney to eliminate Minter from the list of suspects. Higham doesn't really overturn other hypotheses that implicate others such as an unidentified man seen by a witness leaving the scene.

Murder in Brentwood

This is the well known detective from the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Irregardless of our feelings on OJ Simpson this book is well structured, detailed and has numerous copies of documents related to the trial. Fuhrman doesn't hold back on his feelings. He shares thoughts and ideas about the crimes, investigation, and both legal teams prosecution and defense. Looking back 20 years later its easy to see where many things went wrong. Its also amazing to see how crime scenes are processed so differently today. There are plenty of behind the scene looks at what happened in and outside the courtroom when the cameras were off.

This would also make a fun gift for that person you know loves their cat just a little more than most cat owners. At the very least it deserves a browse through just so you can add it to your reading list :)

After Heather's murder,we reader agonize not just because Paddy's in danger but because a moment of awful truth awaits her. Mina shares the rough times of her working-class Scots lifestyle, unsparing brutal details, but unfailingly honest in her humanity. Dead Hour

This is another installment in Mina's series featuring Paddy a young woman report in Glasgow. She is curious, determined and due to those around her has become thick skinned. Paddy is wise beyond her years. She handles the cruelty of life in 80's Scotland well but you always feel she carries a weight on her heart. This book is just as great as the last one and will keep the reader enthralled until the surprises revealed at the end. Paddy and her coworker have volunteered to cover the late night shift in the field. They talk, drink bad tea and listen to the police radio. One night there's a domestic disturbance call. When they arrive there is a man who answers the door. He says everything is okay but standing behind him is a well dressed woman with obvious marks of violence on her face. The man says its okay and slips Paddy and her coworker each a 50 pound note asking them not to take notice. The next morning Paddy discovers there's been a murder and the victim is the pretty woman from the call the night before. The only clue is a neighbor saw a red Mercedes in the drive. The same Mercedes that was in the driveway when she was at the house the night before. So knowing that there might be fingerprints from the killer does she turn in the note and admit she accepted a bribe ? Does she tell her boss the editor or does she go to her coworker to find out what he did with his money....Read the book and find out, you won't be disappointed.

Pinkertons Great Detective The Amazing Life & Times of James McParland

The Pinkerton agency is world famous and over the years has been hired by a wide variety of clients, some famous and some infamous. The noir writer Dashiell Hammett worked for them in the oil fields to help break up a union strike. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used them as a background material for some of his short stories. This book is a fun read and would make a great television series. It fits right in with some of the new shows such as Copper and Ripper Street. I guarantee you'll learn things you know, remember things you forgot and will want to share these stories with others. this would be a fun selection for a book club.

Mark Frost is well know for being part of the team that included David Lynch that brought us Twin Peaks on ABC TV in the 80's. This is technically classified as "young adult" reading but aren't we all young at heart? This is 1 of a trio of books about young adults who are developing not only as men and women but also developing their special talents. This would be great to share with your kids or students in your classroom. If you loved Percy/the Lightening Thief you'll love this.

this is an in depth look at the murder and investigation of Hollywood director William Desmond Taylor in 1922. This crime occurred at the height of the Silent Picture's Golden Age. No one was ever charged with this murder but there was a long list of suspects. Each of those on the list had a reason for wanting Taylor dead. The list looks like a who's who of famous characters such as the butler/valet, starlet and her mother, ex-wife and even a next door neighbor. The author gives an inside look into what was supposed to be a time of fun, wholesome and carefree living in Hollywood.

Final Verdict

Adela Rogers St Johns

, June 26, 2014
These are is the childhood recollections of famous writer/columnist Adela Rogers St John. St John is the daughter of famous/infamous trial lawyer Earl Rogers. She takes us back to Los Angeles to the famous trial of the 2 men who were charged with bombing the LA Times building. Rogers was asked to be a special prosecutor and the defense attorney was the equally famous Clarence Darrow. As a sidebar story Darrow was charged with jury tampering and defended by Rogers after the bombing trial. Ms St John was a young girl and on summer break while these 2 trials took place. this gives us the perspective of the trial from the point of view of a young girl. She also reminds us that her father Rogers was the role model for Gardiners super lawyer Perry Mason. The author worked as a columnist for Hearst publications so there are lots of fun stories about Hollywood performers from her unique point of view. Final Verdict was filmed as a made for cable movie featuring Treat Williams in the role as the father Earl Rogers.

I recently viewed the video of this film and it left me wanting to know more about this group of interesting people. This is a great companion piece to the film. The stories are well written and interesting. I took my copy to the dog ark and could barely read a page before someone commented on the subject. The stories of lovely things being set on fire was extremely moving as were the stories of how entire families were destroyed and now there is no one left alive to return the works of art to. The process of following the trail to locate the items is as great as any fictional mystery. the clerk from the Louvre, Rose Valland (named Claire Simon played by Cate Blanchett in the film) was crucial in tracking the items taken from the Louvre. She meticulously kept records of each item packed and where it would be sent.
