Echo Wife
by

In addition to a brilliant premise, The Echo Wife is packed with interesting themes and aspects. Cloning ethics, hard hitting emotional questions, clever twists, and a FASCINATING but also wonderfully monstrous MC. Evelyn is a brilliant scientist who most decidedly does NOT lean into her emotional side. She has twinges of conscience, but they're really that. Twinges. I really enjoyed watching her handle ethics and sort through her own morality and humanity. The whole story was suspenseful and riveting and the ending was beautifully done. This book has become one of my all-time favorites because it is so thought-provoking. Highly, highly recommended! Elatsoe

Elatsoe is a spectacular, own voices story of a Lipan Apache teenager whose identity is very much woven in. Elatsoe is a great character, with an adorable ghost dog and an awesome cast of friends and family. She's also ace! Elatsoe investigates a mystery that's done in such a clever way - I love how it played out. Really looking forward to reading more by Darcie Little Badger. 4.5 stars. Also, for those interested in pretty books, the hardcover is absolutely STUNNING - the cover below the dustjacket has beautiful designs on it, the illustrations by Rovina Cai are gorgeous, and the metallic lettering on the dust jacket all combine to make it one of the most beautiful books I own.

Watch Over Me
by
Nina Lacour

This was my third Nina LaCour book. I adore her beautiful, haunted writing. Like Everything Leads to You and We Are Okay, this book still had the beautiful lyricism, pain, grief, complexity, and character growth that I loved (minus the romance), but this time it also has GHOSTS! I absolutely love the way Nina incorporated them into this story. The farm was wonderfully atmospheric and I was shocked to hear that she didn't grow up in that setting. Clearly, her research trips paid off! As with her other books, this story is more character-driven than plot driven, with suspense elements that make it easy to binge the book in one sitting (which I absolutely did). I loved this book. Thank you to Penguin Teen and Bookish First for a free hardcover copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own.

A Phoenix First Must Burn: Sixteen Stories of Black Girl Magic, Resistance, and Hope
by

Those of us who enjoy short story anthologies know how hit and miss they can be. It's a rare treasure to find one that's brimming with well-written, powerful, moving stories, beautiful descriptions, and a cohesive theme. Imagine my delight to find exactly all of those things in A Phoenix First Must Burn! It's an anthology of sixteen #ownvoices stories "that explore the Black experience through fantasy, science fiction, and magic." EVERY SINGLE STORY in this anthology was worth reading!! I binged this book and loved every moment of it. Honestly considering rereading, even though I read it just last month. This has now joined the ranks of my top three anthologies (alongside My True Love Gave to Me & The Language of Thorns). Thank you Penguin Teen for a free advanced copy. This is no way affects my review of the book - all opinions are my own.

Harley in the Sky

Akemi Dawn Bowman

4.5 stars! Once again, Akemi Dawn Bowman offers us a beautiful story full of passion, teens finding their place in the world, difficult family relationships, artist souls, a POC/biracial main character, neurodiverse characters, and so much heart. I'm in awe of the way she incorporates timely, vital discussions smoothly into her books. Her characters aren't always easy to love. They do frustrating or impulsive things. They hurt people when they themselves are hurting. They lash out and lash in. They're also kids trying their best. Teens with big dreams that they want - need - desperately to pursue. They have room to grow. I love that when ADB puts romance into her books, it's never the thing that saves anyone. This is such a nuanced story, full with complex characters, gorgeous writing and the glamour and dark side of the circus. Thank you Simon Teen for providing a free advanced copy of the book. All opinions are my own.
