Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis

I'm embarrassed, still, by how long it took me to notice. Everything was right there in the open, right there in front of me, but it still took me so long to see the person I had married.

It took me so long to hate him.

Martine is a genetically cloned replica made from Evelyn Caldwell's award- winning research. She's patient and gentle and obedient. She's everything Evelyn swore she'd never be.

And she's having an affair with Evelyn's husband.

Now, the cheating bastard is dead, and both Caldwell wives have a mess to clean up.

Good thing Evelyn Caldwell is used to getting her hands dirty.

Synopsis

"A trippy domestic thriller which takes the extramarital affair trope in some intriguingly weird new directions." - Entertainment Weekly

This book was not exactly what I expected but really it was exactly what I should have expected. The narrator, Evelyn, was hard to connect to as she is a bit cold, thoughtless, and harsh. Unbelievably so she’s also set up to be the one in the right. Evelyn and her husband have separated. A little different than the typical path, Evelyn discovered he was having an affair...with a clone of her that he made using her research. The layers of betrayal in these were deep and the reader doesn’t get to see enough of Nathan or his motivations to think any better of him. This should have been the end of the story but Martine, Evelyn’s clone, reached out to Evelyn. First to meet and ask questions about impossible things that are in fact still happening, and later when Martine doesn’t know where else to turn. Unlike most thrillers I found myself not knowing where everything was going and being ultimately ok with that. It wasn’t full of too much science but I wasn’t really invested in any of the characters so I didn’t really care where they ended up. The writing style and story line reminded me of an episode of Black Mirror.

In addition to a brilliant premise, The Echo Wife is packed with interesting themes and aspects. Cloning ethics, hard hitting emotional questions, clever twists, and a FASCINATING but also wonderfully monstrous MC. Evelyn is a brilliant scientist who most decidedly does NOT lean into her emotional side. She has twinges of conscience, but they're really that. Twinges. I really enjoyed watching her handle ethics and sort through her own morality and humanity. The whole story was suspenseful and riveting and the ending was beautifully done. This book has become one of my all-time favorites because it is so thought-provoking. Highly, highly recommended! How could there be someone with the exact DNA as you? That could happen if you were cloned. Evelyn and Martine had the same DNA. Evelyn was married to Nathan - both were scientists. Evelyn and Nathan started to drift apart, but Nathan still wanted his wife. To keep her, he cloned Evelyn into Martine. Clones were not to live long. What did Nathan do to keep Evelyn alive? THE ECHO WIFE is way out there and the most bizarre book I have ever read. What the characters did isn't possible in my eyes, and all the scientific information was wordy and tedious for me. Sci-fi fans and readers who enjoy an unbelievable story line should enjoy this book. 3/5 This book was given to me via the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Echo Wife is set in the near future when the science of cloning human has advanced, and the laws surrounding it have changed. Evelyn Caldwell is a brilliant, driven, award-winning scientist who has pioneered advancements in human cloning. She knows what she wants and is clear about it. Evelyn's ex-husband Nathan has used her techniques to make a more docile, agreeable version of her called Martine. The story starts with Nathan's murder. I won't describe the plot more so as to avoid spoilers. The science in this book is absolutely fascinating and the story is well-written, riveting and compelling. I was unable to put it down. The characters are morally grey at the very least and the story raises many ethical issues regarding human cloning. Evelyn's character is well-developed and she grows throughout the story as she learns to become more empathetic. The Echo wife is clever, dark, unsettling and calibrated for maximum squirm. I loved it.
