by
Jolle Retener

, April 11, 2024
This inspiring story of inclusivity follows Marley and Zaza on their journey to the Pride Parade, where Zaza receives a special award. As Marley navigates the overwhelming noise and crowds, the story unfolds with heartwarming realism, offering practical coping strategies. From comfort items to using noise-canceling headphones, the narrative seamlessly integrates techniques to navigate noisy crowds. Narrated by Marley, a nonbinary Black child, "Marley's Pride" delivers a powerful message of acceptance and self-discovery. The informative backmatter provides invaluable resources on pronouns, Pride flags, and the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community, making it a valuable tool for education and understanding. DeAnn Wiley's exquisite illustrations, employing collages and vibrant colors, beautifully capture the exhilaration and occasional overwhelm of the bustling parade. Marley’s Pride celebrates diversity and authenticity, offering a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing one's true self.

Animals in Surprising Shades: Poems about Earth's Colorful Creatures
by
Susan Johnston Taylor

, February 08, 2023
I love the inclusive nature of this picture book. The illustrations are colorful, but not juvenile. The poems are creative, but accessible to all readers including those who are neurodiverse. The real win on this project is the layered offerings for readers of all ages and abilities including fun poems, vibrant illustrations that pop like colorful candy and sidebars that share more information about the animals or about the type of poetry. I highly recommend this for homes, libraries and classrooms for readers of all ages and abilities. Also, makes a great gift!

She Sang for India: How M.S. Subbulakshmi Used Her Voice for Change
by
Suma Subramaniam
debbyZ
, December 11, 2022
I love people's stories. Wether it is researching ancestors or reading a famous person's biography, I hang on every detail. I also love picture book biographies that share details about someone I'm not familiar with. I appreciate the fact that writer Suma Subramaniam wrote a picture book biography about a powerful Indian singer who advocated for justice and peace through song. An incredible story about a woman who changed the world. Artist Shreya Gupta's bold and beautiful illustrations render the reader right in India with M.S. Subbulakshmi. This important story should be on bookshelves everywhere.

Namaste Is a Greeting
by
Suma Subramaniam, Sandhya Prabhat
debbyZ
, December 11, 2022
Long ago, I heard the word 'namaste' for the first time when I attended a yoga class. I was told by the teacher that it meant,"The light in me sees the light in you." I love that writer Suma Subramaniam (Candlewick Press, 2022) created a beautiful, lyrical picture book about the many meanings of namaste. My favorite picture books are those about kindness. I believe if each person did a small act, the world would be better. I love following the little girl's journey through each colorful illustration that is filled with the concept of mindfulness. Artist Sandhya Prabhat demonstrates visually the richness of a beautiful word that can be a way of living, a greeting, and a blessing, all at once. This is a sweet and special book.

The Incredible Shrinking Lunchroom
by
Michal Babay
debbyZ
, November 13, 2022
Michal Baby renders a hilarious and creative retelling of the classic Yiddish folktale "It Could Always Be Worse." I love letter writing in story telling, especially when it's students writing to their principal. Paula Cohen's illustrations are packed with comical details that made me laugh out loud over and over again. There is a ton of kid centric fun in this picture book from juice box towers, to classroom pets on the loose, and the increasing stink of a too crowded lunchroom. I love the author's note and the hidden scene at the end of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's had lunch in a total nightmare lunch setting or who has yet to learn the wise life lesson that gratitude and a positive perspective can make a difference. Because after all, things could always be worse.

My Town Mi Pueblo
by
Nicholas Solis, Luisa Uribe
debbyZ
, November 09, 2022
As someone who grew up in a multicultural family in Texas, I love this book. It talks about two cousins who live in different towns. Each one enjoys visiting the other and notice some things are the same and some are wonderfully different. I grew up in a city and would visit my Mexican American cousins in a small, southeast Texas town. We spoke English in our home, but my relatives spoke Spanish. I love that author, Nicholas Solis, wrote MY TOWN, MI PUEBLO using double page spreads sharing the text in both English and Spanish. Luisa Uribe’s beautiful illustrations are authentic portrayals of the similarities and differences of the cousins’ hometowns. The beginning sets up the story in a friendly way that all readers can relate to. Like the two cousins in MY TOWN, MI PUEBLO, I learned that our differences and our similarities add up to a vibrant world full of even more possibilities. We can build bridges between people and the many ways we are all connected.

Bus Stop: A Picture Book
by
Angela H. Dale
debbyZ
, October 14, 2022
Author Angela Dale takes readers on a trip through what first feels like a typical school day morning, only to discover a special day. I didn't grow up in a state with winter snow, but living in NYC as an adult, I discovered fun snow days. Angela Dale's lyrical text and Lala Watkin's inclusive and vibrant illustrations paint the perfect snow day. Each spread feels like a child finding out a fantastic surprise. I highly recommend the book for kids of all ages, even the big kids who also love to play in the snow.

Dreams do come true! In a world full of uncertainty, it can be hard to let dreams soar. "Dolly! The Story of Dolly Parton and Her Big Dream" reminds all readers how important it is to believe in our dreams and work hard against all odds to make them reality. Robyn McGrath's biography of Dolly Parton makes a wonderful gift for readers of all ages. Ellen Surrey's colorful illustrations bring us up close and personal into the fabric of Dolly's hometown, family, and talents. One of my favorite musical talents sings on the pages of this lovely picture book.

Counting to Bananas Signed
by
Carrie Tillotson and Estrela Lourenço
debbyZ
, March 09, 2022
Banana is the star! But other fruit sensations steal the limelight. Carrie Tillotson's humorous tale and Estrela Lourenco's expressively colorful fruits and animals battle for stage time in this super funny counting book. Banana goes through a range of emotions from excited to frustrated and more. The brilliant art distinguishes each emotion felt by Banana. Readers will delight in the fun humor that fills the pages counting to Bananas. Supporting characters spring off the page with their lines of expression, story direction and animated feelings. Banana dresses like a star with a red bow tie and matching boots. My favorite rendition of Banana is the end pages that show Banana tucked in bed, arm around a stuffed monkey, fast asleep in the fruit bowl. Count this book as a winner!

A Penny's Worth
by
Kimberly Wilson
debbyZ
, March 06, 2022
Penny's story is sensational! I learned some new things such as if you find a penny facing down, flip it over and leave it for the next person to find for good luck. The text and illustrations add up to big characters, fun-filled financial journeys of the different monetary denominations, old memories from my own childhood, math lessons, and historical facts. The art of picture book writing is priceless in Kimberly Wilson's tightly woven story, perfect pacing and inventive language. There are puns a plenty, but each adds value to the sum. Added bonus: great backmatter for parents, librarians and teachers. Mark Hoffman's vibrant illustrations transported me to my own childhood fascination with money and the world it allowed me to access. If you've ordered this book, count yourself lucky!

Big Dreams Small Fish
by
Paula Cohen
debbyZ
, February 25, 2022
Shirley is an adorable girl considered too little to help with the family store. But this little wonder has lots of big ideas to help the store become faster, prettier and more modern. Paula Cohen's beautiful digitally colored pencil drawings creates a voice that is authentically from a child's point of view. The yiddish words add a fun layer. I can't wait to try the delicious recipe for gefilte fish shared in the backmatter. This makes a wonderful gift for readers who believe in young people with big ideas!
