Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Bill Bixby Adult Coloring Book: First Hulk and Legendary TV Panelist Inspired Coloring Book for Adults

I love Bill Bixby (and i think the "author" does as well.) But this is NOT a coloring book. It is a collection of very poorly digitized black and white photos. NONE of which have copyright information. This includes an US Magazine cover! Many of the pictures are very similar to each other. This book is rife with copyright violations and is almost impossible to color. It fails as a book in almost every respect, except it has a cover, pages, and a stapled spine. Would not recommend.

Cult Movies The Classics The Sleepers

A reprint of a 1981 book, this is.... well, weird. The author has some unusual ideas, and analyzes several films from a Freudian standpoint. I am by no means a film historian or a film studies major, but I thought I was pretty well versed in cinema. I would say half of these films I have never heard of, which was startling. My Netflix que is going to see a lot of updating. For anyone interested in pre 1981 cinema, and has not already viewed everything, this is a good guide.

In the House upon the Dirt between the Lake & the Woods

This was a very confusing read for me. I love Indiespensibles, and in almost 40 books I have recieved this is the first one I just ended up flipping through the pages. I will freely admit that I am not into metaphor heavy works, but this was far beyond anything I could cope with. What was real, what was a fever dream? It is clearly a painful, heartfelt work, but it felt like a faery tale with a msytic reality story inside it that included the ravings of a fevered fisherman too in love with his own great black whale. Avoid this book if you want a sense of closure, or a resolved narrative.

Night Circus

Not in years have I read a book so complex, so convoluted, yet so intellectually stimulating it seems an easy read. The author was involved in the creating of the online ARG "Fallen London" and it shows. Vignettes that seem merely window dressing come around much later (ellipses and curves seem to figure prominently) to carry much import and meaning. I would recommend this for anyone who likes darkness, turn of the century literature (both of the last ones), circuses or pushing the boundaries of entertainment. I am surprised the book did not come with a companion CD, DVD, cooing dove, map or indeed silver ticket to the circus.

I can't say enough good things about this book! It lays out in simple, funny language how to lose weight the natural way: eat less and exercise more! Lots of great advice from your new best friend, never scolding, always tortured herself (just like me!) and never making you feel guilty.
