Quite easily one of the best books I read in 2011 and maybe one of my favorite books of all time. We'll see if it stands up after I've read it a second time.

Hobbit & The Lord Of The Rings Boxed

These are the best books I read during this first decade of the 21st century. Tolkien was a wordsmith of the first degree and this tale of Bilbo and his kin made me keenly aware of what good fantasy writing should be. I have trouble reading the poorly written fantasy novels I used to read, knowing that great work like this exists.

This was a great start to the series. I love the reimagining of all the fables and fairy tales as exiles from their own world. The art is equal to the story.

I thought this book was pretty good. The end was a little contrived. I'm halfway through the second book, and was pretty pissed for about a quarter of what I've read so far. But, Stephenie Meyer has the hook. I will probably read all four.

Italian for Beginners (Full Screen)
by

This is not the best movie in the world, but is pretty on par for a romantic comedy. Actually, it's probably better than a lot of the crappy American romantic comedies in theaters today (a la Kate Hudson/Matthew Mcconaughey). If you're in the mood for something light and fluffy, this is definitely your movie. The acting was pretty good and the story doesn't drag. I actually don't remember much about the movie, except that it wasn't bad. If you don't like reading your movies, though, you might want to learn Italian and Danish first.

Transformers (Widescreen)

I thought this movie was just about perfect. A little too PG-13, but oh well. Shia Leboeuf was great. It really made me want to see more movies w/him in it. I was extremely worried about this movie. So many classics from my youth have been remade horribly, and Michael Bay is, well Michael Bay. Not my favorite director. But the story was good, w/just enough cheese to counteract the seriousness of it all. Optimus had the same voice actor. It was all good. We saw it twice in theaters, once in a regular theater, once in IMAX. Seriously, if you don't already own this, why not?

Harry Potter 07 & The Deathly Hallows
by
J.K. Rowling

, July 23, 2007
so, i started rereading the series a couple of weeks ago in anticipation of the movie and this book. what i noticed as i read was that the first couple of books bring in to play many things that are pivotal to the plot throughout the later books. heck, sirius is mentioned in the first couple of pages of book one. this took quite a lot of planning. this book was good. maybe not the best of the lot, but certainly a good way to finish. i need to reread the last few chapters again as i was pretty sleepy by that point and there are a few things that were unclear to me when i woke up this morning. if you haven't yet started reading this book and you haven't read the other books in a while, i highly recommend rereading the first 6. i only got to book 4 before i purchased my copy of the deathly hallows and had forgotten information from books 5 & 6 that harry guys would bring up w/out much background context. what really made the story move along in [t]the deathly hallows[/t] was that rowling finally stopped reintroducing things and explaining things to death. though this was also a flaw at times when i couldn't quite remember certain things. anyway, if you like harry potter, you'll be reading this book. hope you enjoy it. i know i did.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. We had taped it off of the Disney Channel or something, and I used to watch it all the time. I had a chance to watch it again a couple of years ago, and it was still very entertaining. Seriously, who doesn't like apprentice wizards, dragons and a lottery of death? This movie is wicked awesome!

Eragon: 2-Disc Special Edition (Widescreen)
by

If you have read the books, I do not recommend this movie. It's horribly dissapointing. If you've not read the books, I believe this movie might be quite good. The pacing is a bit fast, but should be enjoyable to young teens. There are a lot of similarities to [t]Star Wars[/t], [t]Lord of the Rings[/t] and countless other sci-fi/fantasy novels/movies. Though, when I read the second novel, I thought [a]Paolini[/a] kind of came into his own. So, my recommendation is, watch the movie, then read the books. The second one is much better than the first. Not a big surprise since he wrote the first one at 15.

Inheritance Cycle 01 Eragon
by
Christopher Paolini

, January 11, 2007
This was a great book. Actually, I listened to the unabridged book on tape (first time i've ever done that) and found it thoroughly enchanting. I looked forward to it every time I got in the car. I read it again much later, and while I still enjoyed it, it's not the best fantasy novel I've ever read (i.e. it's not LOTR). But, for a 15 year old, the writing is very good. The sequal ([t]Eldest[/t]) is better than Eragon and I will be very curious to see how Paolini finishes out the series.

Castle in the Sky

This movie is amazing. But, you need to watch it with the Japanese language track not the English dub (This DVD contains both). The opening sequence is enough for anyone to know this. Compare the first 5 minutes in each language and there will be no doubt that the Japanese language track is superior. Disney felt the need to add a bunch of unnecessary dialogue. It is very detrimental.

Spirited Away

The dubbed version is crap. James Marsden is annoying and uber lame (probably why he got picked to play Scott Summers in the X-Men movies). I highly recommend watching the Japanese language track. It's not that hard to read and watch at the same time. As with all of the [kw]Miyazaki[/kw] films that Disney has "brought" to the USA, they altered not just the language in the English dub, but the soundtrack as well. You get completely different viewing experiences from the Japanese to the English Dub version because of it. [t]Laputa[/t] (aka [t]Castle in the Sky[/t]) is a classic example of the poor transfer to English. Please watch this movie. It is great. Just please watch it the way it was created, not the way Disney hacked it.

Superman Returns: Special Edition (Widescreen)
by
Parker Posey

When the talk for a new Superman movie first started, I believe it was for a complete start over for the Superman movie franchise, much like [kw]Batman Begins[/kw]. Seriously, who would want to watch a sequal to [t]Superman IV[/t]? So, when I heard that [t]Superman Returns[/t] was a sequal, I had my doubts. Fortunately, it was not a total dissappointment. It was definitely written with the same campy feel of the original 4 movies, and the premise was believable based on them. Brendan Routh was a great Clark Kent/Superman and I was impressed by Kevin Spacey's portrayal of Lex Luthor. The whole crystal growing thing was a bit lame. Honestly, the best thing about this movie was [kw]Kal Penn[/kw]. I did not expect him to be in it, but he was, and it was awesome. His 3 minutes of screen time was great. Also, did James Marsden lose Lois Lane? I hope so. It was great when he got got in X-Men 3. In conclusion, this was an okay Superman movie. Just don't expect it to be better than [t]Superman III[/t].

This is a pretty bad movie. The one thing it's got going for it is Jack Black. It's the typical teen/coed horror flick. Kids go on vacation, they all get separated, they start dying, until the killer reveals himself and it all works out in the end. Or they all die in the end. I forget.

I am so sad that I never saw this when it was actually on the TV. I am even sadder that they will probably not make any more. What I am extremely happy about, though, is that I have seen this and there are some great extras on the DVD. We started watching the first disc and any time we were near the TV we had to stop everything and watch the next episode. It's such a campy kind of show. Lots of humor in the vein of [t]Buffy the Vampire Slayer[/t] and [t]Angel[/t], but distinct in its own rite. You will enjoy this collection. I know. Watch it soon and be very happy.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. The special effects are great, Chris Tucker and Bruce Willis are great together and it just reeks of so many other sci-fi novels and movies. Armageddons Children Genesis Shannara 1
by
Terry Brooks
my name is jonas
, August 01, 2006
I had pretty much given up hope on [a]Terry Brooks[/a] before I read this book. The whole [t]High Druid of Shannara[/t] story arc didn't seem all that thrilling to me. I actually started losing interest in his writing after I read [t]The Lord of the Rings[/t] for the first time. Brooks' prose just seemed rather poor after reading [a]Tolkien[/a]. I am happy to report, however, that I have renewed faith in Mr. Brooks. Having got my hands on an advanced reader copy of [t]Armageddon's Children[/t] has made my reading experience of late very happy. I have not read any of his "Knight of the Word" novels, which was not a detriment to this story. [t]Armageddon's Children[/t] picks up some time after [t]Running with the Demon[/t], [t]A Knight of the Word[/t] and [t]Angel Fire East[/t] and is simply fantastic. I will go out in the next couple of days and pick up those first two. If you're a fan of the "Shannara" and/or the "Knight of the Word" series, you will definitely want to read this book. And, if you've never read either, this is an amazing intruduction to all of the great works of [a]Terry Brooks[/a].

House Rabbit Handbook 4th Edition
by
Marinell Harriman
my name is jonas
, July 20, 2006
If you are thinking about having a pet rabbit, you should read this book first. Before we went to the humane society and got our first bun, we got this book, which was extremely helpful in getting our apartment ready to house such a fun, loving and sometimes destructive little creature. Even after we'd had Cinnamon for a couple of months, we often found ourselves referencing this book to help us understand his needs and behaviour (binkies and tooth purring are good; he chews on my pants because he thinks my fur is matted; food with colorful bits is bad for him). When we decided it was time for him to have a companion 6 months later, we turned to [t]The House Rabbit Handbook[/t] again to see how to set up a meeting between potential mates, and again, to decipher behaviour. He finally became friends with a very exuberant girl who helped him out of his shy little existence. (They're both altered, so no little ones on the way) Anyway... [t]The House Rabbit Handbook[/t] is the best introduction to these wonderful creatures. I really can't recommend it enough.

I read this book a couple of times in middle school. I still remember most of it today, some 18 years ago. It was the first book I read where someone my age was completely alone and somehow found a way to survive. By the end, Brian is not only surviving, but creating his own life and making his own way. There is a lot of inspiration in this book, and quite a bit of adventure. I highly recommend this book.

I was torn on how to rate this. The original Japanese version is superb. I am very unhappy about the English version. This isn't even the original English language track you may have seen before. It's Dakota Fanning :P Like all Studio Ghibli productions that Disney has "brought" over to the US, look for the story to be altered, altered soundtrack, and probably a really annoying intro by John Lasseter about how he's great friend's with Hayao Miyazaki and how Hayao is just thrilled that Disney messes up his movies. Stupid Disney. Stupid Lasseter. Even if you don't speak Japanese, just watch w/Japanese language track and subtitles. It's a much better story.

We really enjoyed this movie. We actually went to the theater to see it twice. My wife and her aunt totally love this book and the original BBC/A&E miniseries, and they really liked this version. They had some trouble getting past the fact that Mr. Darcy wasn't played by Colin Firth, the first time they saw it, but really liked this version the second time around. We got the DVD for my wife's aunt and she absolutely loves it. She really liked the commentary. If you like Jane Austen and or Pride and Prejudice, you definitely need to get this DVD. Also, check out Bride and Prejudice. It's a remake of Pride and Prejudice set in India.

i really enjoyed this movie. i didn't expect it, but i actually found some parts scary. i actually jumped at least once in the theater when i saw it. plus, it's got john stewart in it. he was hilarious, AND he gets stabbed in the eye w/a pencil. i would totally recommend this one.
