Crooked Staircase A Jane Hawk Novel
by
Dean Koontz
Margie
, June 01, 2018
I love Dean Koontz's books - all of them - but his Jane Hawk series is simply amazing and scary realistic. In the latest installment, The Crooked Staircase, Jane continues to pursue justice for her husband and others who have been murdered by people in a horrible conspiracy to create utopia. As a former FBI agent, Jane has skills and technical knowledge that helps her in her quest. Start from the beginning. You will not regret beginning the series and will be completely hooked. Can't wait for the next installment.

Blink of an Eye
by
Ted Dekker
Margie
, July 14, 2017
I am a new reader of Ted Dekker and find his books intense and riveting. Blink is the story of a genius who meets up with a Saudi princess who is on the run from her family and an unwanted marriage. They go on the run together with government agents and Saudi bad guys after them. Throw into the mix a new talent of Seth, that of seeing multiple possible outcomes for various circumstances as they try to outwit the good and the bad. This is a great read and I am in awe of this author.

Those Across the River
by
Christopher Buehlman
Margie
, July 08, 2017
About 100 pages into this book, I thought to myself "why are you reading this?" However, I kept on to the final page. This book is sometimes confusing, oftentimes bizarre, slow to action, and seriously spooky. A disgraced man, who was once a professor, inherits a house in Georgia near his gr-grandfather's old plantation where the gr-grandfather was killed by his slaves when he refused to release them after the War Between the States. Though Frank Nichols was told by his aunt in a letter to him after her death, to sell the house he instead moves in with his mistress who he calls his wife. The poor town's tradition of sending pigs into the woods across the river is stopped after people spoke out against it, no one knew why there was such a tradition, and the people decided they needed the meat and money donated to the farmer from whom the pigs came, for themselves. Mayhem ensues. A story of revenge and retribution.

The Silent Corner
by
Dean Koontz
Margie
, July 06, 2017
One of the best suspense books I have read lately. The thing about Dean Koontz's books is that you can actually imagine the things he writes about happening. If you think about it too much, you might scare yourself silly. He is an amazing author and I have been a fan ever since I read Watchers and I think that was in the late 80's or early 90's. There is another Jane Hawk book coming out I think in the next six months or so. Can't Wait!!!

Library of Souls (Miss Peregrines Peculiar Children #3)
by
Ransom Riggs
Margie
, September 30, 2015
A rollicking, rolling, adventurous conclusion to the Miss Peregrine trilogy. The peculiar children realize their many strengths as they try to save themselves and their guardians from the Wights and Hollows. The people and others met along the way add to the story in a most peculiar fashion. The whole trilogy with all the, often, wonderfully spooky pictures is a different type of book with a great story. I highly recommend the whole series.

A very interesting take on the whole apocalyptic scenario. Getting into the minds of the primary characters was interesting. The secrets, lack of trust, the underlying motivations for actions. Some of the characters personalities were flat and at times the writing was boring. However, the premise was interesting.

The Innocent: Will Robie 1
by
David Baldacci
Margie
, April 30, 2015
I just started reading Baldacci's books a week or so ago and cannot put them down. There are several series going so try to start at the beginning so you have the backstory. If you like suspense/thriller, this is the guy to read. The Will Robie series, which starts with The Innocent, was excellent and I have just started the John Puller series which is also excellent. The stories and the details are great and I think you will enjoy Mr. Baldacci's books.

Close Range Wyoming Stories
by
Annie Proulx
Margie
, April 14, 2015
I am not sure what all the hoopla is for this author. After the first story, I wanted to stop reading the book but am one of those people who had to read it all. Her wordy descriptions made me think of writing an essay where you had to have at least 1000 words before the teacher would accept it. Instead of stories, I felt like she was simply giving descriptions. I assume she is writing for the so called "intellectual" and though I am not stupid, when reading fiction I like stories with content and an ending. You know, old school. So many of her stories were just left hanging. In other words, I am glad I got this book for a buck at a library sale and did not waste more money on it.

Advanced Civilizations of Prehistoric America: The Lost Kingdoms of the Adena, Hopewell, Mississippians, and Anasazi
by
Frank Joseph

, March 13, 2015
If you wonder about the pre-history of America, particularly the United States, you might want to consider reading this book. It is a very interesting read and has numerous photographs and drawings illustrating some of what you are reading about. My biggest problem with the book is how angry I get at the descriptions of wanton destruction of historic mounds and other structures, even into the 20th century.

Kings Mountain A Ballad Novel
by
Sharyn Mccrumb
Margie
, November 20, 2014
Usually with Ms. McCrumb's books I get enthralled in the story right away. This one I had to slog through. The writing was not as flowing and seemed really stilted at times, but once I got into the story I enjoyed the premise; I just did not get engaged in the story and with the characters like I usually do with her books.

Mary Summer Rains Guide To Dream Symbols

Just got this book recently. It is the BEST dream symbol book I have ever seen and I have at least 1/2 dozen others. The brief sentence explanations for the high points of my dreams are spot on and I am able to interpret them much easier to my current life than using the other books which have much more explanatory information that is not as spiritually connected as Mary Summer Rain's book.

Legends of the Star Ancestors Stories of Extraterrestrial Contact from Wisdomkeepers Around the World

Interesting stories and people in this book. If you ever watch Ancient Aliens, you may have seen Nancy Red Star on some of those programs. Everyone has an opinion and sometimes the opinion on the subject at hand is only one line. My thoughts? We would be stupid to assume we are the only "intelligent" life form in the whole solar system. Current contact? Probable.

Dreamgates
by
Moss, Robert
Margie
, January 03, 2013
Ever since I was a child my dreams have been very vivid and I have kept a dream journal for years. I still remember dreams from when I was a child. Sometimes I would feel like I was in another world having wonderful adventures or sometimes watching aspects of myself intercting with people and animals. I did not know how right I was until I read this book. Many times I would read something in the book and think, so that is what such and such dream was all about! Or, that was the purpose of that dream. Or, so that was why I had that dream. And, yes, some were and are shamanic dreams, soul recovery dreams, psychologically and physically helpful dreams, etc. If you think you don't dream, think again. You just need to actively seek your dreams and sometimes go back into the dream to seek an answer. Journaling whatever you can remember is helpful but so is reading this book so you have some idea of application. Robert Moss is a good author with good suggestions for full participation in your dreams and helpful understanding. I highly recommend this book to those who seek to understand.

Dreaming the Soul Back Home Shamanic Dreaming for Healing & Becoming Whole
by
Robert Moss
Margie
, September 19, 2012
Are you tired and dragging? Do you suffer from depression or other mental or physical health problems? Have you suffered trauma (and who hasn't) in your long or short life? If so, you may have suffered soul loss, a part of yourself that runs and hides from the trauma suffered, whether it be emotional or physical. A shaman can seek to repair your soul sickness or you can do it yourself through conscious dreaming and sometimes spontaneously. The book Dreaming the Soul Back Home: Shamanic Dreaming for Healing and Becoming Whole explains well how you lose parts of your soul and how to find those parts and integrate them back into yourself for wholeness. This is the second of his books I have read and each contains exercises to promote understanding and speed the process. Always having been a strong dreamer and having recorded my dreams for years, much about Robert Moss' books resonate with me.

Betrayal
by
Kathleen Oneal Gear
Margie
, September 05, 2012
You know how you pick up books at sales and set them aside until you find time to read? You don't?! I do only too well-just ask my husband as he sees me come in with yet another book. Anyway, this novel would probably be considered heresy, just as many thought The Davinci Code was heretical. However, The Betrayal actually uses the hiding of the lost gospels in various forms, and the efforts to destroy such works, as the premise around which the story is written. It is an engaging story and I like the use of footnotes which refer to the Notes section in the back of the book giving more information about that particular sentence, issue, occurrance, etc. People might say I am a conspiracy theorist, but I have felt since I was a child there was more to the story than written in the Bible and I am in awe of authors who can take such information and weave it into an informative tale. How much is their imagination and how much is universal knowledge imparted to them?

Shadow of Night: All Souls Trilogy 2
by
Deborah Harkness
Margie
, August 08, 2012
Another thrilling book from Deborah Harkness in her trilogy, which I actually hopes goes into more than just three books as I am already champing at the bit for the third one - vampires, witches and daemons, OH MY! The weaving of history and fantasy kept me enthralled with its many twists and turns, as did the developing relationships between the primary characters. Contact with the fathers and those timely relationships was deeply touching. All around a great book. I have read A Discovery of Witches was the adult version of Twilight. Having not yet read the Twilight series or seen the movies, I do not have that for comparison, but I doubt those books have the scholarly nature of Ms. Harkness' writings. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Family Safe in a Crisis
by
Peggy Dianne Layton
Margie
, May 08, 2012
A good starter book to get ready for emergency preparedness. With the mindset of many of the people of the world today, the crazy weather patterns, earthquakes, etc., it is best to be prepared for any emergency that might happen. I try not to be an alarmist, but each individual must realize you cannot rely on the government to ride to your rescue in the event of a widespread disaster. You must be able to take care of yourself - at least for a while and maybe even for months. Get yourself prepared now and this book can help you get started.

Dreamgates

Moss, Robert

I have always been interested in dreams and even remember some from when I was a child. For years I have journaled my dreams which can be pretty wild at times. Having had some spontaneous precognitive, shamanic and creative experiences, and some I have actively sought, I recently felt compelled to read Dreamgates by Robert Moss. Although I should not have been with all I have experienced, I was taken aback by this book which described so many key points of my dream experiences. I was thrilled to find simple exercises to heighten my control of my dreaming experience and to even take me to where I wanted to go. This book is an easy read and is a gem of a book for the beginner and experienced person alike who want to enhance their skills and travel/journey to interesting places and make worthwhile and helpful contacts. My next read is Active Dreaming by Mr. Moss. I think you will find his writings a helpful resource.

I enjoy books which impart old Wisdom and it is interesting to read a book on birthdate meaning which is not just the same old astrology sign book. After all, we are all struggling right now to understand ourselves, others, and the world at large. Any extra clues which might help me in my endeavors are always welcome and you may feel the same. Also, read the other books by Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe (Moon Time, The Art of Timing, and Guided by the Moon). Between their four books, you will find a multitude of old Wisdom which will hold you in good stead for quite a while.

A Discovery of Witches: All Souls 1
by
Deborah Harkness
Margie
, January 01, 2012
An excellent book combining the current interests of vampires and witches. What happens when a witch, who tries to deny her heritage, calls forth a book which no one else has been able to locate? What happens when a witch and a vampire find themselves involved in a forbidden relationship? What happens when they join forces to right wrongs and stop evil? You have to read this book to get the background and wait for the next one to come out to get, maybe, a few answers. A Discovery of Witches, the first book, will keep you enthralled until the very last page. Don't lag behind, read it NOW!

My accupuncturist recommended this book to me due to continuing problems with my shoulder/arm after a fall. Although there were actual physical problems still with my shoulder/arm, this is an interesting read concerning the mind/body connection and how thoughts and emotions can affect your physical health. You may get discouraged during the book with all the technical and scientific jargon concerning peptides, neuropeptides (reminded me of watching Star Trek and hearing all those terms for the first time), etc., but slog through it and you will find glimmers of helpful information. I actually bought another of her books so, yes, I did find useful information.

Spirits of Just Men Mountaineers Liquor Bosses & Lawmen in the Moonshine Capital of the World
by
Charles D Thompson
Margie
, June 21, 2011
Unlike The Wettest County in the World, a novel based on events that occurred in Franklin County, Virginia, Spirits of Just Men is a factual recitation of events that occurred in that same locality and portraits of some of the people who lived the life. The people - both men and women - who made and transported "illegal" liquor, white lightning, moonshine, were just people trying to make a living and support their family in the hills where there were no professional people or factories to give them jobs. Farming helped feed the family but did not provide shoes, clothing, salt and other necessities. That is not to say there were not some people who just enjoyed the fast, adventurous life in outrunning the law and seeing new places, because there were. Like Keister Greer's "Moonshine Conspiracy", Spirits of Just Men will give you a taste of what it was like to live in the early 1900's in the area where I later grew up. Actually, people still produce shine in our region, particularly those who grew up with it and that is all they know or young bucks thinking to make a quick dollar. And, yes, my family was involved in the liquor business in the past too. Come to Franklin County, Virginia where the Moonshine's Bright and the Crooked Road runs through. Moonshine and music just seemed to go together, you know.

This book was given to me for Christmas as my friend knows I like ghost stories, fantasy, etc. The great thing about it is that it is specific to my home state and I recognized the areas spoken about. Many of the stories seem to be just standard made up ghost stories, but some are stories I have heard about regions myself. Some would give me chills. All in all, it was an enjoyable book. The great thing is that there are other books on other states in our glorious country of the same type. I will have to read more. What fun!

This book was given to me and is about a woman who lives in a forest in Russia and about ringing cedars. Without formal education, this woman speaks knowledgeably about religion and spirituality, business, nature, metaphysics, etc. Sometimes I will read a passage and think, oh come on now; but at the same sime, I think I wish I had read this book at an earlier age. I am 54 years old and wonder if I can implement some of the suggestions and make a difference. It is a fascinating read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

I always loved fairy tales. I guess I still do since Spinners is a retelling of a fairy tale - can you guess which one? - and I found it to be an interesting expansion on the story. While most fairy tales just jump into the tale with no background information at all, Spinners fills in the the full story on this particular tale - at least the authors' take on it. I think this book would be interesting to teens and adults alike.

These mysteries are well thought out, quite funny in places, and informative about herbs. I get so involved in the stories, I do not want to go to bed. The one thing I do think about though is that like the character Jessica Fletcher of Murder She Wrote fame, I hope I never meet a China Bayles because someone nearby is going to die and I do not want it to be me!

Dean Koontz

Ahhh, this is more like it. Some of Mr. Koontz's recent books have not measured up, but this one is one like his books of old. Has Ryan, whose heart is failing him, been poisoned, is his condition genetic, is he paranoid, is he hallucinating, are the people closest to him to be trusted? The thing about a lot of this author's books is usually you can actually see a situation like this happening. This one kept me guessing and made tingles run up my spine.

Are you fed up with feeling bad and equally fed up with doctors who cannot tell you what is wrong but still want to throw a pill at the problem? Then think about self healing. This is a marvelous book with some practical techniques you can use to make yourself feel better - like clearing your chakras while in the shower. Yes, there are many other things you can do to treat yourself, but are you just taking care of the symptoms or actively doing something that will have some long term effects? Try the suggestions in this easy to read and understand book for a while and then let's talk about how you feel.

A friend just loaned me The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. Once I started reading, I could not put the books down and finished both in one weekend. I just had to see when the third book would come out and find it is late August - AAARRRGGG! While considered a series for teens, this series would be equally enthralling to adults. I CANNOT WAIT FOR MOCKINGJAY TO BE RELEASED!

Despite the "official" review, this book is another slam dunk for Kay Hooper. The story line continues the Noah Bishop/Special Crimes Unit (or Spooky Crimes Unit) series and is just as action packed as the previous books. If you like mystery and a little, well actually a lot, of paranormal activity, you cannot miss with this book.

I picked this book up at a library book sale and it is the first time I have read Mr. Gibbins' work. While it gets a little technical at times - which just makes the brain work harder - the book is an exciting story of a search team who locates Atlantis and the many surprises they find there and Russian terrorists who keep getting in the way. I will definitely look for Mr. Gibbins' other books.

I have in the past practiced the art of forgiveness and asking for forgiveness. This book, The Shack, just brought it all home to me again. If you only read one book this year, read this one and reconnect with the spiritual side of yourself. After reading this book,on a spiritual level I once again forgave all those who have "wronged" me and I asked those I may have wronged for forgiveness as well. It was as though a burden was lifted and I felt so much lighter.

As usual, I pick up a book at a book sale for a few cents and, after I start reading, realize it is somewhere in the middle of a series of books. What happens then? If the book is good, I buy the others in the series so I get the whole story. Do you realize how much money I have in books???!!! Well, guess what, I've ordered - yes from Powells - Hunting in Fear and Sleeping in Fear thanks to the $5.00 Valentine gift from Powells. Soon I hope to get the rest of the series, the "blood group" that continues the story and it seems to be ongoing. Can you stop with one book? Yes, but why would you want to? A good read with suspense, the paranormal and, oh goody, murder.

As the author found, if you want a true companion in an animal, let the animal come to you instead of searching them out. An animal's sense of rightness in a relationship is often much better than a human's and, yet, we are supposed to be the evolved creatures. Two of my best dogs came purely by chance and I have decided that when Harley, the last of my "chance" dogs, dies I will simply wait for the next one to appear when the time is right. A beautiful story.

I read A Wrinkle in Time for the first time when I was 13 and at age 51, I still pick it up from time to time to read it and the rest of the series. I have given the series to numerous young teens as a birthday or Christmas gift. What a wonderful book that makes you want to read more!

Do you have an interest in shamanism but cannot afford the workshops or cannot find them in your area and you don't have time to take a trip to locate one? Then try this book with drumming CD. It is a helpful guide to understanding shamanism and the drumming CD can get you to the other realms. Don't have time to read a book? Then buy the book on CD which has one drumming session at the end. Expland your horizons and set off for the unknown to see what awaits you. You can take a trip and never even leave home.

Wise Child, its prequel, Juniper, and Colman are delightful books with a mixture of supernatural and mystery making for good reads. The characters are rich and the stories will capture your attention and not let go.

Having a difficult time understanding the concept of feng shui? This little book is very helpful and has actually motivated me to start uncluttering my home and my life. It was a gift and a very good one to receive. It has made me want to read even more on the subject.

A good little story that was never finished. I understand it was to be a series of books, and volumn II: The Conquest, was written though in a darker vein. It is a shame the series was not completed and the author was not granted more control to finish the series. I believe it could have been a popular and sought after series of books.

For One More Day

I enjoyed The Five People You Meet In Heaven, as there were kernals of truth found in that book on so many levels. It continues with this book. As a matter of fact, as a former Social Worker I found the divorced family dynamics described so true in many instances that this book should be required reading for every couple with children going through divorce, as well as children themselves who are old enough to read and understand the book. One never knows what the end results will be when you only act for yourself instead of thinking of the impact the action may have on someone else.

I laughed, I cried - trite but true. What happens when a black family moves into an all white community in 1940's Tennessee? Maybe about what you would expect, but there are also surprises in store. A really GREAT and easy read.

Weekend Warriors
by
Fern Michaels

The first of a series of books on The Sisterhood, a group of women who, with a former MI-6 accomplice, exact revenge for injustices perpetrated against them. Though extreme justice is applied, you can't help but pump your fist in the air with the success of each mission. Once you start with the first book, you are compelled to go on to the next ones: Payback, Vendetta, The Jury, Sweet Revenge, Lethal Justice. The newest one, Free Fall, will be coming out soon. BE WARNED - NOT Fern Michaels' usual style of writing.

Johnny Got His Gun

This is a horrifying book. Not the writing itself, the contents. It is one you cannot put down and with the advances in medicine today, what happened to the hero could possibly happen today. I read this book many, many years ago but never forgot it. I loaned out my copy and it conveniently disappeared so if you buy it, safeguard it or you may not get it back.

Cajun Cowboy

I loved the characters in this book so much I had to buy the other two - Tall Dark and Cajun and The Red Hot Cajun. Tante Lulu is an absolute scream and I can't wait to read the other two books. Nothing like starting in the middle and then going to the beginning and end. If you are looking for romantic comedy, try Sandra Hill's Louisiana trilogy.

This book give you a good history of the Chicago Exposition and all the complications and set backs of its creation. Thrown in are tidbits of information concerning seriel murderer H. H. Holmes, but it really does not deal with him in depth. If you want to know more about the Chicago Exposition though, it is a very enlightening read. I learned a lot.

Mysterious Ancient America
by
Paul Devereux

, October 19, 2006
This book was recommended to me by a friend and it was a good recommendation. We hear and read all the time about the ancient past of Europeans, Asians, Africans and others, but it is rare to read a whole book devoted to the Americas' ancient peoples. There are a lot of theories which Mr. Devereux throws out for you as to how they got here, where their knowledge came from, etc. and you have to decide which best resonates with you, but is sure is nice to have it all in one book instead of scattered here and there.

Charles de Lint books are always a treat. He reminds you that there are still mysteries and wonder to be found in the world and out of it, you only have to look. Dealing with Jilly Coppercorn's disability (read Onion Girl first) and understanding how the psychological mind affects the physical body is a lesson everyone needs to learn. If you are not already a fan, begin reading his books and you won't be disappointed.

Sherryl Woods is a hoot! The first book I read was After Tex and it was laugh out loud funny. Since then I have been a constant fan and always pick up her books when I see them. And since I love trilogys, this whole set of The Backup Plan, Flirting with Disaster and Waking up in Charleston was a must read. Her characters are believable and you may find you both laugh and cry your way through her books. Always buy her books. You will not be disappointed. I wasn't.

Don't you just love Debbie Macomber? I do! Her writing style and sense of humor always give me a chuckle. The Snow Bride was no exception. It's a nice little romantic comedy set in Alaska, that place of few women and wild men. A great and easy read.

Usually I eat up this type of book, but it was a difficult read. Some of what I read resonated with me and my beliefs. Some of it was really out there and a stretch for me to buy into (I didn't). I encourage everyone to read this book even if it is difficult for you to get through and you have to put it down, read something else, and then come back to it - I did, several times. You may just find that one kernel of truth which really speaks to you.
