Star Trek Cross Stitch Explore Strange New Worlds of Crafting
by
John Lohman
Kjirstin
, October 23, 2014
Cross Stitch is an act of love that takes some time to produce. With the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek arriving in 2016, buying this book now will give you plenty of time to create a masterpiece to wear on the Red Carpet with Payne/McKay at the screening of Star Trek 3. Some great patterns here. What could beat the face of Spock on your child's onesie, or the Star Trek symbol on your formal gown? Go, Trekkies!

Red Mist Scarpetta 19
by
Patricia Cornwell

Coastal Georgia meanders into view Patricia Cornwall style in her latest thrilling whodoneit in the Scarpetta series. She's becoming more predictable, but there are still enough surprises to keep you clicking pages to the end. A good airplane read or something to keep you disconnected from irritating relatives during the holiday season. Enjoy!

Fablehaven 05 Keys To the Demon Prison

This is the last in the exceptionally well-crafted young-adult fantasy series known as Fablehaven. My older teen boys liked these better than Harry-Potter, and read them several times. The voices in the CD are entertaining, and I recommend the audio sets for long vacations, as everyone in the family can enjoy them together.

Fablehaven 04 Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary
by

Brandon Mull has grown as a writer, and this penultimate is an outstanding addition to the series. I read all 527 pages in one day, because, just like the others who commented, I couldn't put it down! Like Harry Potter, the characters in Fablehaven take on lives of their own, and you feel you know them as intimate friends. I especially enjoyed the line, "You shouldn't roughhouse with satyrs," Grandma chided. Exactly what I would say to my mischievous grandson were I the caretaker of a Preserve for Magical Creatures!

Bel Canto

Ann Patchett

Somehow, this book got shoved under my radar, and I didn't read it until this week. What a charming, different, unusually well-crafted book! I haven't finished it yet, so perhaps the ending will be tragic, which I suspect, given the circumstances, but what a study in the arts and human relationships. Ann Patchett's awards for this masterpiece are well deserved. If you've missed it, read it!

Fablehaven 03 Grip Of The Shadow Plague

Oops! I thought I was commenting on the book, not the CD, so now I must add that this CD is AMAZING. Read by an actor (sorry, I don't have his name handy) who uses wonderfully characterized voices, this CD is truly a pleasure to hear. He voiced books one and two, and will hopefully be around to read the entire series. My husband enjoys his long business commute much more when he can listen to books on CD, and this series has been one of his favorites.

Grip of the Shadow Plague: Volume 3
by
Brandon Mull
Kjirstin
, May 22, 2008
Like Harry Potter, characters from the Fablehaven Series spring from it's pages directly into your heart, and there take up permanent residence. Book one begins with the tale of two siblings--the good Kendra, age thirteen, and her mischievous brother, Seth, eleven--very with-it kids of today, squabbling in the car like some you may know personally. When they are unexpectedly palmed off on little-known grandparents for the summer holiday, the two soon discover they aren't quite in Connecticut anymore. Book two aged the children a year, and in this third installment, Kendra is 15 and her pesky little brother, 13. Seth has still not learned his lessons about minding his grandparents very well, much to the delight of readers everywhere. You are quickly swept into ancient legends, where you join Kendra battling larger-than-life Hopi Kachina Warriors over stairs only visible to her in a cloudburst. Action in this book never ends, leaving readers breathless at the conclusion, and eagerly awaiting book four. Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List for Children's Literature at #3, so you know it is worth owning. Chances are it's a book you'll want to read aloud to your own children, but you'll be forgiven if you simply savor it yourself, along with that chocolate bar you've stashed away in your freezer.

Ender's Game: Ender Wiggin Saga 1
by
Orson Scott Card
Kjirstin
, February 16, 2007
This book was first written by OSC when he was only 15, and ran in a Sci-fi magazine. Later, he worked it into a novel, and it remains, to this day, my #1 pick of Sci-fi favorites. I understand it is soon to be made into a full length feature film (as movies are finally able to portray the intensity of this book) but you will want to read it first.

Inheritance Cycle 02 Eldest
by
Christopher Paolini
Kjirstin
, February 16, 2007
This book did not continue where ERAGON left off, but was a slower, more draining, vastly overdone revamp of Star Wars with fantasy overtones. The dwarf language was excruciating. My boys couldn't even finish it, but I kept on reading to see if it would improve. It didn't. For some reason Paolini didn't want to say a character went "half-way" somewhere, so he wrote "three-quarters" at least six times, as if that were more original. It wasn't. It not only took me out of the story (wondering if I should return to the illustrated map and measure something) it made me wonder what this kid had been smoking. Tedious. Dare I say it? Boring. If you want good Sci-fi, read the oldie but goodie ENDER'S GAME by Orson Scott Card. For good fantasy, try something new, like FABLEHAVEN by Brandon Mull. Christopher Paolini was hailed as a wonderkid at 15, but it was by his own family marketing machine. I bought the first two books, but I won't fall for it a third time. If his final installment is ever published, I won't even get it from the library.

The first time I read this book, I hated it. It struck me as something written by an English-major who wanted to show off all the big words he'd learned in college. I picked it up again and was able to finish it, amused by parts, bored to death by others. I recommend FABLEHAVEN instead.

Harry Potter 07 & The Deathly Hallows

I'm sure HP-7 will be the best of the best, and I'm having a hard time waiting for it to come out this summer. Meanwhile, I'd like to suggest a new series for those like me who "can't wait" called "FABLEHAVEN" by Brandon Mull. This book, like HP-1, starts out with younger children, a brother and sister ages 11 and 13, with promises to keep new books coming. (Book 2 will be out in May). I really enjoyed FABLEHAVEN, and the way Mull weaves the lives of modern-day kids into a fantasy world so believable, you'll start planning a family vacation to FABLEHAVEN until you remember it's fiction. My 17 year-old son (who is a Harry Potter fanatic) said he liked it more than HARRY POTTER! I don't know that I'd go that far yet, but FABLEHAVEN is a seriously fun and imaginative read for fantasy fans of all ages, and is available here on Powells.com.
