Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Seeing this 75th anniversary edition released made me giddy! If you loves vampires, werewolves, or just a bit of blood, all written with grace, eloquence, and a bit of menace, you must read Angel Carter's work. The Bloody Chamber is a perfect place to start, but have Saints and Strangers waiting on your bookshelf!

The Martian

This book was such a blast to read. There were so many moments of true danger, yet Watney's "well, let's see if this solution doesn't kill me" attitude was one that kept me rapt while often giggling. Sad it's over, but so damn glad Mark Watney got stuck on Mars.

Lets Pretend This Never Happened

This book made me laugh like an idiot. Usually I read in bed to relax before sleep, but this had the opposite effect, as I couldn't stop laughing while reading it. Then it takes a veer into very sad territory, but back again to awesome. I started laughing so hard one night, and tried to suppress it so my husband wasn't disturbed. Big mistake. The bed was shaking so hard from my silent chuckles that he thought an earthquake had just hit Portland. Seriously. I love Jenny Lawson with my whole heart.

Wow. Just...wow. War-torn Chechnya is not a setting I normally read fiction about, but this book was so beautifully written. The horrors, the joys, all of it was so engrossing. An absolute must-read.

This book so perfectly captures that crazy teenage time of first touches. When you had no idea a person's hand on your neck could make you feel electric. So sweet and innocent, and yet...not. This book is a perfect depiction of that first love where you just KNEW it would last forever, and of course it didn't.

Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void

Who hasn't wondered about some of the more *ahem*, personal, aspects of space travel? It's not all bouncing around in zero gravity, mugging for the camera back home. How do you eat without getting crumbs everywhere? Can you have sex in space? And of course, the biggest question of all - how do you poop in zero gravity? Really - think on the logistics of that for a moment. This book explores these subjects, as well as things you wouldn't even consider, unless you were a rocket scientist, of course. And it's all written with a lighthearted touch, so that even those who failed physics in high school will find the science fascinating and easy to follow.

Night Circus

I received this as my first Indiespensible selection, in a beautiful slipcover. Reading Gerry's comments about falling under this book's spell was all I needed to know. I took this on a vacation to Hawaii, and it was the only thing that I could focus on, which is a pretty impressive feat, while sitting feet from Manini Beach. It pulled me into this world that is just lush, exquisite, mysterious yet inviting. I truly was sad to put the book down at the very end, but am so grateful for the journey it took me on. Truly an enchanting work of art.

One Day

Excepting the professions of the Em and Dex, this book takes two very normal people, and shows how an amazing friendship can stand the test of time and mistakes. No matter how many "wrong" choices Dex and Em make, they are there for each other through all of it, leading to the ending you expect - and the one you don't. I haven't had a book make me bawl like a kid in eons, and I'm so glad to find one that touched me as much as One Day did.
