Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Fault in Our Stars

I've been a John Green fan for quite a while at this point. I'd always had this attachment toward his first novel, Looking For Alaska, and I went into this one not expecting for it to surpass it. And yet it did. But I'm not entirely sure how. The themes in LFA still resonate the strongest and nothing will compare to Alaska Young, but I found myself so enthralled by the love that Augustus and Hazel shared that I keep going back to it. (It's become my own An Imperial Affliction, though without a cancer diagnosis) And every time I go back and re read it, I leave with something different than before. So different that it's almost like reading a different book all together. It's beautifully written and it grabs you and doesn't let go until you've read that final word, and usually it doesn't let go even then. The story will stick with you and never again will I hear the word 'okay' and not be reminded of the story. Maybe the reaction you have won't be the same as mine, but I'd love to share it. (Even if it feels like I shouldn't)

I read this book on accident. I was in a hurry at the store, I picked it up because the cover was blue and stood out among the row of books that used mostly dark colors. I expected it to be a waste of my six dollars, but I was way off. The book was a very fast read, despite being nearly 500 pages long, due to my need of wanting to know what happens next. The story is frighteningly realistic and Jason Meyers knows how to keep the reader hooked until the very end. It's a difficult book to read, however. The subject matter is rough and he doesn't censor it like many others would. I highly suggest this book, but be warned of the difficult subject matter. If you can handle through it, then it all pays off for what I consider to be the greatest final chapter in a book that I've ever read. The best accident that has happened to me in quite some time.

This is among my favorite book I discovered it quite literally, by accident. I was walking down a row of books and I saw it on the floor, like someone had dropped, picked it up and it looked interesting. Bout two months later I decided to go on and buy it and that night I stayed up all night reading it. It is hauntingly beautiful and descriptive and visual. I couldn't put it down. Very few books have sat me down to be read in one sitting. This is a haunting book, beautiful I must say. A perfect read for anyone. And to be honest, it changed how I thought about things, how I interacted with people. I highly suggest reading it. You won't be disappointed. I give Thirteen reasons Why 5 out of 5 stars and I will for sure be re reading it several times. Thank you whoever dropped it that day last October :)
