Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Communing Tree

The Communing Tree, winner of the WILLA Literary Award for best young adult fiction in 2019, offers a story for everyone: survivalists, veterans, young adults and adults alike. Set in the Oregon wilderness, it tells the story of two sisters and their adventures living alone in the wilds of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. A well-written and compelling read.

Walking Across Egypt

I absolutely loved this book! The characters are so well portrayed and the main grandmotherly character was so spot on, I couldn't stop reading. This book has many laugh out loud scenarios, it was just a fun, light, summer-time type book. This one will stay in my home library and be re-read for sure.

Greens 24/7: More Than 100 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Recipes for Eating Leafy Greens and Other Green Vegetables at Every Meal, Eve

I originally found this on the "Lucky Day" shelf at the library. Now I'm headed out to buy it! The subtitle says it all; the recipes look great and mostly easy to make. The book is set up for a vegan diet and also offers suggestions for gluten-free. There is such a wide variety of recipes and creative use of vegis, I can't wait to sneak these nutrients into my family's diet. Cucumber Pesto; Mexican tortilla soup; Zucchini Oatmeal Cookies. Yum.

Plastic Free How I Kicked the Plastic Habit & How You Can Too
by
Terry, Beth

This is such an informative and inspiring book. I thought I was fairly "green" but learned so much from reading this. For example: those little stickers on fruit and vegis? Yes, plastic, that gets into our eco-system. Did you know there is a guy you can send these stickers to and he makes art from them, really unbelievable stuff! Those "scrubbing beads" in your face wash? Tiny beads of plastic that first get rubbed on your skin, then washed down your drain into the water system. Terry tackles both large and small issues and offers excellent ideas to reduce plastic use. I haven't made it to "plastic free" but I have significantly reduced my use of plastics as a result of the ideas she presents in this book. Kudos to Terry!

I absolutely cannot recommend this series enough! I love these books! I read all three books to aloud to my tween daughter, and we loved them, can't wait for the next one. Although these are middle reader books, I have recommended them to adults in my life as well, they are sort of nostalgic and funny and heartwarming. A great family read!
