Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Return of Captain John Emmett
by
Elizabeth Speller
Andrea McNally
, October 24, 2015
I predict that this will be a Masterpiece Mystery on PBS someday; it has all the required ingredients: murder, madness, romance, the horrors of war, social commentary, literary allusions, illegitimate children, and a most convoluted mystery. Beautifully written, both fascinating and disturbing. Ms. Speller drops a major bomb in chapter two and doesn't let up on the suspense until the final page.

Ladys Maid
by
Margaret Forster
Andrea McNally
, July 06, 2011
Margaret Forster, the author of "Lady's Maid", has previously written a biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I surmise from the current book that she developed serious reservations about the poet's character in the process. This is not just another retelling of the famous love story from the maid's perspective. This novel is based on diligent scholarship, a deep understanding of 19th century life below stairs, and a refusal to romanticize the realities of being a servant, even to the reigning literary celebrity couple of their day. In exploring the complicated relationship between Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her lady's maid, Lily Watson, Forster leads the reader to think in new ways about issues of feminism, parenthood, and friendship.

Summer Of The Great Grandmother
by
Madeleine LEngle
Andrea McNally
, April 02, 2011
While recording her mother's slide into senilty and her own honest and complex response to it, Madeleine L'Engle also explores the lives of the strong, brave, and charming women of her family, also named Madeleine. Although watching as her mother slips further and further away is heartbreaking, the stories of these women made me marvel at the rich and rewarding lives buried in all our family trees. For anyone dealing with the tragedies of old age and Alzheimers [and most of us will eventually be touched by one or both], this memoir may bring comfort, understanding, and some peace.

Book Of Air & Shadows
by
Michael Gruber
Andrea McNally
, February 06, 2011
Every Shakespeare fan wishes the historical record were just a little more complete; so many questions, so few answers. Michael Gruber combines a compelling modern mystery story with just enough historical speculation [not too far out but certainly unexpected and thought-provoking; nothing about the second best bed] to appeal to both the Shakespeare fan and the Elizabethan history junkie. Very satisfying.
