Home Front
by
Kristin Hannah

Forget everything you thought you knew about wars and the people who so bravely serve our country because "Home Front" will forever change that. This is an amazing account of a brave soldier who took incredible risks when she was unexpectedly deployed and thrown into the horror of war. Beautifully written, this is a book like no other that not only explores a unique role reversal but perfectly balances the trauma of loss, loneliness and conflicting views on a very real topic. Because war is not one of my topics of choice, I was not expecting to become so engrossed in this powerful story and I can say without a doubt that it is the best book I've ever read. This is a must-read for every American who has had any exposure to war, be it in their personal lives or simply through television, Internet or newspapers. It will change your life in ways you never expected.

Seinoff

Jerry Seinfeld
lovewriter
, January 11, 2011
Who knew a book about the most hilarious show ever would move me to tears? I wish I had known about "Sein off" when the show ended on May 14,1998. Dozens of pictures and a fascinating story show just how much fun the cast had filming that last episode and also how emotional it was for them to say goodbye. When I saw a picture of Jerry Seinfeld (the best comedian around, IMO)in tears, I almost lost it. Definitely a must-read for any Seinfeld fanatic. Made me want to take them all and hug them for making such a wonderful show. But that would go against the coveted Seinfeld rule "No hugging". Sigh...

The Making of Some Like It Hot: My Memories of Marilyn Monroe and the Classic American Movie
by
Tony Curtis
lovewriter
, December 12, 2010
As someone who's seen "Some Like It Hot" countless times, I thought I knew everything there was to know about this classic film. However, Tony Curtis has proved me wrong. Inside this book are hundreds of secrets (some that would make Daphne and Josephine blush!)and often hilarious observations written as though he was talking directly to me. Thank you,Tony for making this movie and for the laughter you've brought to the silver screen. You are very missed, but will never be forgotten!

When you read the ending of a book three times, you know you've found a wonderful story! Just the right mixture of seriousness, romance and comedy had me reading well into the night. Samantha's transformation from high-profile lawyer to down-to-earth housekeeper was highly entertaining!

Brava Valentine

Is it possible for a sequel to be even better than the original? If that book is "Brava Valentine" then the answer is YES! Picking up where "Very Valentine" ended, the hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking story of the Roncalli family had me hooked from the very first page. Romance, drama, and a little sadness. What more could a girl want?

Very Valentine

In the time it took me to read this first book in the trilogy, I felt as though I had traveled from New York City all the way to Capri in Italy. Amazingly, just a day after I read about the Blue Grotto in "Very Valentine", I saw it mentioned on a travel show and it was exactly as I had pictured it. Adriana Trigini has a gift of beautiful storytelling, and of transporting her readers to places they may otherwise only dream about!

Viola 01 Viola In Reel Life
by

From the moment I first "met" almost-fifteen-year-old Viola, I felt as though I were sitting in a big comfy chair, hearing about her unexpected friendships and first love (which she adorably kept me up to date on her romance scorecard; 3 kisses, one cookie, etc) at Perfect Academy. This is an inspirational book that people of all ages should love because it focuses on one thing; following your dreams and making them happen.

Not a bad book, but I just found it painfully slow. Wasn't really sure what the point of the story was, and it took a long time to gather steam and even then became only remotely interesting. I tried to read it several times and finally gave up on it. Fortunately, the author has written many books so I'm going to give one of her others a try.

There are books that make you want to hug them as soon as you've finished the last chapter. "Shopaholic and Sister" definitely falls into this category! What an unexpected delight! Sophie Kinsella's done it again with this installment of the Shopaholic series. Hilarious and at times moving, "Shopaholic and Sister" is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs that had me hooked from the first page!

As a fan of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, I was thrilled to learn about this amazing book! If it weren't for Powell's I doubt I would have known that it existed. A major bonus was learning that the author is the same Ron Judd who writes intriguing and hilarious travel articles for The Seattle Times! After the closing ceremony in Vancouver, I felt a little sad, knowing there would be no more games. Thanks to Ron Judd (and Powell's)I can hold onto my Olympic spirit just a little bit longer!

I had heard good things about this book, but I couldn't really find much to like about it. This is probably the first book I've ever read where I have disliked every single character. The mother was a horrible, nasty woman who would make the wicked stepmother in Cinderella win the mother of the year award. The other characters, including the main character, were downright annoying and the storyline was predictable, at best.

The minute I started to read, I fell in love with this book instantly. Unlike many main characters whom the reader comes to love as the story unfolds, Colie was wonderful from the beginning. I truly felt for her and I wish this book had been around when I was in my early teens. There are some wonderful messages here about making the best of a situation, being yourself and learning to let go of the past. It was very hard as I neared the end, knowing I would have to say goodbye to Colie, but the memory of this story will stay with me for a long time.

Warning, do not read this book if you are hungry! :) Loved the aspect of the Italian restaurant and the many wonderful recipes included throughout the book. Although the story starts out strong, there are a few places where it seemed to lull. However, once the loose ends came together, the storyline really picks up and I found that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! This is one of the best Susan Wiggs' books I've read!

Ready to Fall
by
Claire Cook
lovewriter
, January 13, 2010
By the time I finished "Ready To Fall", I was ready to throw it out the window! Started out promising, but was such a HUGE disappointment! Instead of following the blossoming relationship between a lonely housewife and her travel writing next door neighbor, we are "treated" to a series of emails that she writes to him. Not only do we never really learn about this man, but the entire book is told from her point of view. We have to imagine what his responses to her long, drawn out and at times, ridiculous, emails. She definitely sounds like a lonely housewife, but one that is obsessed with this man, while she and her husband have marital problems, which never are dealt with. She's extremely open and honest in her messages, and some of the subject matter I doubt any man would want to hear. After suffering through this book (which thankfully only took 3 1/2 days to read), I highly advise that you skip this one. I'd rather read the dictionary.

Shopaholic Ties The Knot

Sophie Kinsella's "Shopaholic Ties the Knot" should be compared to a roller coaster thrill ride. Starts out slow, but as the story progresses, the pace really picks up. Becky's dilemma of having to choose only one wedding had me turning pages faster than I thought possible! At times some of Becky's mishaps were just plain stupid and others made me want to give her a sympathetic hug. However, when it all wraps up, Becky' solution is nothing short of brilliant!

I can't wait to read more of Becky's adventures!

I used Birnbaum's back in 1996 for my honeymoon to Walt Disney World and it proved to be a godsend at a time when I didn't have access to the Internet. I'm happy to see that they are still putting out new editions on all the Disney parks! When planning a trip to Disneyland, Birnbaum's is an absolute MUST! Not only does it contain valuable information, and an easy to read format, but it's one of the few guides I've seen that includes pictures. By the time you finish this book, you'll know more about Disneyland than the Mouse himself!

Unofficial Guide To Disneyland 2010
by
Bob Sehlinger
lovewriter
, October 28, 2009
The only reason that I'm not rating this five stars is because of the presentation of the information. Maybe it's because I've been to both Disneyland and Disney World more times than I can count, but I felt at times I was being "talked down to". A lot of the book came across as being so negative that I found myself wondering if I should rethink my decision to visit Disneyland. This book contains very detailed information about everything you would possibly want to know about the Disney park and includes California Adventure as well as the surrounding areas of Anaheim. Aside from the questionable "Flash Mountain" section, I found the suggested guides very confusing and much too orderly for a family to be able to enjoy themselves; especially if they are trying to follow the guides exactly as written. Despite any flaws, this "Unofficial" guide would be a good book to take along to get the most out of your Disneyland visit.

Movies made from books are wonderful but they don't come close to the experience that comes from reading.

I am completely shocked at how consistently this book gets wonderful reviews. I HATED it! I read this expecting to find a sweet love story. Instead I got a story filled with sex, animal cruelty and VERY descriptive details about the human anatomy. Completely disappointing and at times I found my stomach churning at the nauseating descriptions. Because I received this book as a gift (I am the one who had mentioned wanting to read the book so badly and it was not yet available from my local library), I read it all the way to the end, HOPING it would get better. Sadly, it only got worse as it progressed. I cringe when I think of what Sara Gruen's other books must be like.

They communicate only by writing. Great book; very moving, sometimes funny and definitely enjoyable. I am anxious to read it again!

What a unique book! Mother and daughter communicate through notes left on the refrigerator door. Very touching and emotional, but a very quick and easy read. No actual speaking conversations take place; just simple notes to each other.

Leaving Eden
by

I absolutely LOVED this book! After I finished it, I immediately wanted to read more about Tallie and her adventures in Eden. Anne D LeClaire gives us a little bit of everything; romance, family, friendship, career, travel.. you name it! And if you are a fan of Natalie Wood, you will REALLY love it, because Natalie is a prominent 'character' in 'Eden' I love that the book takes place in modern times, but it reads as though it takes place in the 50's. It has that small-town feel, and the thing I loved most about this book was how Tallie would describe things and people most notably, that someone was as 'Dependable as a ceiling fan.' Not sure what that means, but it has certainly stuck in my mind! PS: Tallie has a unique way of describing a certain regular event in her life... a phrase that women will find very useful!

Version Of The Truth
by
Jennifer Kaufman

Readers beware! If you don't like a lot of swear words in your books, DON'T bother with this one! Unlikable characters make up this ridiculous mess of a story involving Cassie, a high school dropout, nature lover and recent widow. Desperate for a job, she lies on a job application and lands a position at a prestigious University. I found Cassie to be an incredibly self-centered person who found fault with everyone she encountered. There were several times during the course of my reading that I wanted to smack for her stupidity. The author's interest in swear words appalled me; especially one word in particular which was used 52 times (I counted!) throughout the book. Very rarely did I find a page that had no swear words at all, and the unnecessary swearing completely ruined what seemed to be a promising book. I'd be very leary about reading any more books by Ms. Kaufman and Ms. Mack; especially if their other books are as bad as this one.

Probably the funniest Anne Tyler book I have ever read! Charlotte is hilarious as a woman who is kidnapped during a bank robbery. She recently decided to leave her husband and almost succeeds in driving her kidnapper crazy! The two head across the country in an adventure that is both hilarious and exciting.

Mosaic Pieces Of My Life So Far

I have been an Amy Grant fan since way back in 1985 and I was pleasantly surprised to find that this "autobiography" is unlike any other I've read in a long time. Instead of a chronology of Amy's life from birth to the present, she presents to us a series of memories, categorized into short stories. Interspersed are lyrics to some of her most popular songs as well as some new ones. What a wonderful way to spend a weekend, reading Amy's messages of faith, love and devotion!

Audrey Hepburn an Elegant Spirit A Son Remembers
by

Sean Hepburn Ferrar speaks from the heart about his beloved mother. He writes with such honesty that one tends to forget that Audrey Hepburn was a classic film star in addition to a devoted mother. We learn about her habits, her loves and her dislikes. I thought I knew most of what there is to know about this wonderful woman. Sean changed all that and made me see that there is much more to her than what she portrayed on screen. This book is incredibly moving and heartfelt. I should know. I've read it three times (and counting!)!

Next Thing on My List

What drew me to this story was the uniqueness of it. I'd never read anything quite like this before. There are moments that will make you laugh out loud and others that will move you to tears. The storyline falls a little flat toward the end and doesn't have the same "excitement" as it did at the beginning. However if you are in the mood for romance, friendship and just plain fun, don't miss this one!

By Myself & Then Some

Lauren Bacall

Lauren Bacall has certainly led an interesting life! I didn't know much about her and I'm glad I decided to pick up this book and read it cover to cover. The most moving moments are when she speaks of Bogie. I was moved to tears by her honestly about their loving relationship. Although she remarried years after Bogie's death, the marriage didn't last and it makes you really feel for her. Every Lauren Bacall fan should read this book. The only thing I didn't really care for was the "And Then Some" chapters, where she discusses 9/11 and other more recent events. They seemed like they were just thrown in and don't really go with the first part of the book.

American Prince A Memoir
by
Tony Curtis
lovewriter
, February 26, 2009
Before I read Tony Curtis' autobiography, I hardly knew anything about him. After finishing the book, I know more about him than I ever cared to know. He's extremely open and honest and doesn't hold anything back. The most interesting chapters are those at the beginning where he discusses his childhood and the chapter on "Some Like It Hot". He's a wonderful actor, but what most people aren't aware of is his tattered childhood, which seemed to mold him into what he became.I started to feel sorry for him, but then he seemed determined to let the world know about his infidelities and relationships with numerous women. I could have done without a lot of the coarse language, but all in all it's a must-read for any Tony Curtis fan!

Sugar Daddy Travis 01
by
Lisa Kleypas

, February 26, 2009
Sugar Daddy started out as a great read and I found myself drawn to the main character, who is introduced to us as a child. We follow her life through good and bad times, hoping she makes the right choices along the way. The story takes place in Texas and the more I read, the more I found myself longing to revisit that wonderful state. Unfortunately the main character is less appealing in latter chapters and I wish it would have had a different outcome. However, Ms Kleypas has written a uniquely entertaining book and really showcases the state of Texas.

I was excited about this newest novel, but I ended up really disappointed in this story. Usually I love the characters that Kristin creates, but I simply did not like the ones presented here. There was nothing to "draw" me to them and the one that I really didn't like sadly didn't change throughout the book.

I didn't think this was possible but when I got to the end of this book, I had the incredible urge to turn to page one and start all over again. It's that good. I found this book by chance, and from the very first page, I was drawn into the story and all the wonderful characters; even the unfaithful husband was interesting. "On Mystic Lake" was my first introduction to Kristin Hannah and made me a lifelong fan!

Comfort & Joy
by
Kristin Hannah
lovewriter

"Comfort and Joy" is, in a word, Magical. There's no better way of describing it. The main character, Joy, embarks on a new adventure not realizing that through tragedy, it will take her to a whole new world. When I first read this book, I was disappointed because I found it to be unbelievable. However, when I read it a second time I just fell in love with this magical storyline. Once you realize that the underlying tone of this story is magical and not "realistic", you should find it thoroughly enjoyable.
