Beautiful Ruins
by
Jess Walter

This book is full of characters that will stick with you. As Rebecca Newberger Goldstein blurbs on the back cover: "The beautiful ruins of Jess Walter's novel are characters so exhilaratingly human that you want to break out into cheers and sobs," I felt myself longing to know an elderly Italian gentleman like Pasquale so he could impart his hard-won wisdom. And the underlying humor about Hollywood, while I have no idea how accurate it is, lends something more than glamour to the story; it reflects the need in so many of us to make our mark. "We want what we want."

A great, bi-generational tale of family, race, friendship, and history in contemporary England. Funny too.
