House of Stone A Memoir of Home Family & a Lost Middle East
by
Anthony Shadid
jlamf
, January 20, 2013
In rebuilding his family house, Shadid searches for his roots in the land of his father, yet the Lebanon of then no longer exists. But the people, they exist. At times this memoir is reminiscent of "A Year in Provence", more bittersweet, but revealing of an essence of the Middle East.

Tinkers
by
Harding, Paul
jlamf
, January 01, 2011
In prose as finely wrought as the workings of the clocks that Harding's dying protagonist has spent his life repairing, this novel casts a spell on readers who will ponder the nature and interconnections of memory and existence.

This is the first book that popped into mind when I read the notice for 2010 Puddly Awards -- not a moment's hesitation! Zadie Smith's sparkling prose aimed at all the right cultural targets scored a hit for me.
