Kelsey Ford: Powell's Picks Spotlight: Emma Seckel's 'The Wild Hunt' (0 comment)
Every summer, my extended family and I rent houses in a small town along the Oregon coast. For a week, we take long walks along the beach, spend afternoons cooking elaborate meals, play Fascination in the arcade one town over...

My Horizontal Life A Collection of One Night Stands by Chelsea Handler
    Bet, July 12, 2007
I don't think this should be shelved in "Erotica". It's really more humor. It's a fun book that you could read in front of your grandmother.

Year 1000 What Life Was Like at the Turn of the First Millennium An Englishmans World by Robert Lacey
    Bet, July 12, 2007
I enjoyed the book. It's not a page-turner, but it is interesting and well-written. I dipped into at odd moments over the course of a week instead of reading straight through.

Glass Books Of The Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist
    Bet, August 10, 2006
I wanted to like this book. And I did, I really, really did -- until maybe about page 600...... I love the three main characters but the novel devolved into an action movie or a video game. At the end of the book, I would have been fine if everyone had died. I was that tired of it. And yet, I think Dalquist is a good story teller because I did read the whole book. It just should have been better.

Douglass' Women by Jewel Parker Rhodes
    Bet, July 03, 2006
One of my favorite historical novels! The two women -- one white, one black -- who shaped Douglass' life finally get a chance to shine. Powerful and moving.

Birds of a Feather: Maisie Dobbs 2 by Jacqueline Winspear
    Bet, July 03, 2006
A good series. I enjoy historical mysteries and post WWI London is lovingly recreated. The detective is sharp and likeable and very modern in her thinking.

Nickel & Dimed on Not Getting by in America by Barbara Ehrenreich
    Bet, July 03, 2006
This is a quick read by a great writer. It has (thankfully) been years since I had to hoist a tray of fish sandwiches and coleslaw but this book brought it all back home to me -- the terror of rent day; the struggle over which bill to pay on time...... Excellent book and should be required reading for all of our college-aged kids!

    Thin Woman by Dorothy Cannell
    Bet, June 28, 2006
Ellie Haskell feels dumpy and unloved and wouldn't you know it she has to go to a family reunion. She hires an actor to portray her fiance. Murder and humor ensue........ Read this one first. Otherwise you'll spoil the story arc for yourself. There are not enough books in this series, so read them slowly.

How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams by Dorothy Cannell
    Bet, June 28, 2006
Read this series! It is wonderful! But, don't start with this book -- this is the middle of the series. Start with [t]The Thin Woman[/t]. This is one of my all-time favorite mystery series. I just wish there were more. OK, really quick -- in the first book Ellie Haskell feels dumpy and unloved and wouldn't you know it she has to go to a family reunion. She hires an actor to portray her fiance. Murder and humor ensue........

Dream Of Reason A History Of Philosophy by Anthony Gottlieb
    Bet, June 28, 2006
An excellent overview of the early philosophers. Perfect as a "brainy" graduation gift. It's not dry read at all. The personalities of these thinkers comes through.

City Of Falling Angels by John Berendt
    Bet, June 17, 2006
This is an engaging book. It's similar to "Midnight" but there's an obvious reason -- same author, afterall. If you want a glimpse behind the curtain of Venice, read it. I'm glad I read the book before I visit [kw]Vencie [/kw]this summer -- I now have a better chance of not looking like a tourist!

The Omnivores Dilemma by Michael Pollan
    Bet, April 28, 2006
I will never look at a corn field the same way. Most of the corn grown in this country is processed into unrecognizable bits and pieces. I think this book will be life-changing and I can only hope that it might be government policy changing as well.

    London Fields by Martin Amis
    Bet, March 29, 2006
My favorite Martin Amis book. A mystery from start to finish..... Who is the killer? Keith, the odds on favorite bad boy or Guy, the seemingly nice guy.
