Last Night In Twisted River
by
John Irving

Last Night in Twisted River proves once again that John Irving can write about anything (including his beloved sex, marriage, wrestling and bears)and entertain. At first I didn't think I wanted to read a book about a father and son and their friend and their experiences at a northern logging camp. But, of course, Irving can make anything interesting, and he moves the story through various cities and relationships and adventures that the characters encounter. There is often some tragedy or sense of impending doom in Irving's sories, yet the reader always knows the emotions ring true.

Beloved Infidel

I picked up an old copy of this book without a jacket and couldn't tell if it was fiction or autobiography, but I was riveted from the start. It is the true story of late Hollywood gossip columnist Sheilah Graham's upbring from placement in an English orphanage by her impoverished mother to her intimate relationship with F. Scott Fitzgerald. It also chronicles her various relationships and involvements on her way to becoming one of the big three feared gossip columnists of the great Hollywood era. A completely fascinating life story! How did these people cram so many experiences and liaisons in such time. It is also an interesting look at Fitzgerald and the tortured writer's soul.

Of Human Bondage

Can't believe I waited this long to read this classic. It was so painly astute as a character study, but it was also like a car wreck I couldn't look away from. Such a good example of how people make choices; bad, ill-informed choices, that shape the path of their lives. A compelling read!

American Wife
by
Curtis Sittenfeld

Although this book was published in 2008, I just got around to reading it and it had a profound effect on me. I don't remember it causing much furor, but it borrows so much from what we've heard and speculate about Laura Bush's life that we wonder if all of it could be true. Regardless of its references to "real people", and no matter what one's politics are, it is a powerful study of the inner life of a reluctant public figure and the inner workings of a marriage. I think reading it made me more compassionate toward both public figures and married people! I also loved Curtis Sittenfeld's Prep. She has amazing insights into her subjects and I think all adolescent girls and their moms could get a lot of perspective on the pressures of that age group from reading it.

Know It All One Mans Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World
by

The Know-It All is funny, gratifying and informative. In his quest to become the most informed man on the planet,(or annoying party guest)you get the history of the world through the various Encyclopedia Brittanica clips that author A.J.Jacobs chooses to share with the reader. The book also chronicles this magazine editor's struggle to find his place in the world and his family. I'm looking forward to what other challenges he decides to tackle beyond reading the Encyclopedia Brittanica and becoming a father!
