No Bull, Just Books: Recommendations for the Year of the Ox

by Rachel Marks and Rhianna Walton, February 12, 2021 9:49 AM
Lunar New Year 2021: 12 Signs That You Should Read a Book This Year

If you’re ready to take life by the horns, 2021 is your year! Or if you want to call bull on that idea, this is still your year! 2021 brings us to the Year of the Ox, the second out of the 12 zodiac signs.

Legend has it that the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by a race of all 12 animals. The Ox was positioned to be the first to arrive at the Emperor’s palace, only to be tricked by the Rat when asked for a ride. At the last second, the Rat jumped off and landed in front of Ox. At least second isn’t last?

Whether you’re slow to the palace because you’ve been tricked or because you got caught up in a good book, we can provide some titles for the latter based on your zodiac sign. To find out which one, check out our list below...

Books a la Mode: 8 Book Recommendations for Your Favorite Pie Flavor

Books à la mode: 8 Book Recommendations for Your Favorite Pie Flavor

Aside from Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” dessert is my favorite part of the holidays (if anyone from my family is reading this, sorry and I promise I love you more than dessert). While I love my grandma’s schnecken and my cousin’s Oreo cheesecake bars, pie takes the cake for me in the holiday dessert realm. And what better way is there to take a break from the family drama than with a slice and a good book?

Although I can’t offer any recipes, I can offer you a book recommendation from 2020’s new releases for wherever you fall on the pie spectrum.

Pumpkin
I couldn’t not start with the holiday heavy-hitter. If pumpkin’s your go-to slice, I get it. You’re a traditionalist and love a comforting read to accompany your dessert...

Stonewall and Beyond: A Pride Month History List

Pride 2020 looks pretty different. With June starting off with rightful unrest across the country and world, as well as the ongoing pandemic, the parades and parties that line the streets throughout the month will have to wait until next year. As if a mirror is being held up right now, the road to Pride parades and parties is paved with rightful unrest. One way to show up for the LGBTQ+ community this, and every, year is by honoring and learning about its history. From Stonewall to marriage equality, the writers below provide a great starting point for a Pride history lesson...

The Stonewall Reader The Stonewall Reader
Edited by Edmund White and the New York Public Library

This excellent anthology, drawn from the NYPL archive, contains first-person accounts, contemporary newspaper and magazine articles, diary entries, and profiles of the many LGBTQ+ activists whose work leading up to and after the Stonewall Riots led to the LGBTQ+ liberation movement...

Read Like a Rat: A Book for Each Sign in the Chinese Zodiac

by Rachel Marks and Rhianna Walton, January 24, 2020 9:11 AM
Lunar New Year

2020 is the Year of the Rat (take that how you will), which is also the first sign in the Chinese zodiac. Thought to trace its origins to the mythical Chinese Emperor Huangdi (2711-2599 BC), the Chinese zodiac is an ancient classification system based on the lunar calendar that assigns an animal and its attendant characteristics to each year within a 12-year cycle. Like western astrology, the Chinese zodiac is intricate, based not just on animal signs (which break down into yearly, monthly, daily, and hourly classifications), but characteristics like yin/yang, planetary alignment, and the natural elements water, earth, wood, fire, and metal.

While we can’t offer you an astrology chart, we can predict with certainty that 2020 will be the year you read like an animal. To find out which one, check out our list below...
