Publisher Comments

Two couples' lives become scandalously entwined in the latest from New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand.

Nantucket writer Madeline King has a new novel coming out, The Rumor, and it's got bestseller potential. But Madeline is terrified, because in her desperation to revive her career, she's done the unthinkable: The Rumor reveals the truth behind an actual affair involving her best friend, Grace.

And that's not the only strain on Madeline and Grace's friendship; one fateful night, the two women argue, voicing jealousies and resentments that have built for twenty years. Bereft of each other, they get caught in the snares of a mysterious and destructive stranger. Their fate hinges on The Rumor -- and the secret it reveals.

THE RUMOR is an irresistible novel about the power of gossip to change the course of events, and the desire of people to find their way back to what really matters.

Synopsis

Madeline King and Grace Pancik are best friends and the envy of Nantucket for their perfect marriages, their beautiful kids, their Sunday night double dates with their devoted husbands. But this summer, something's changed, and if there's anything Nantucket likes better than cocktails on the beach at sunset, it's a good rumor.

And rumor has it...

...that Madeline, a novelist, is battling writer's block, with a deadline looming, bills piling up, and blank pages driving her to desperation--and a desperately bad decision;

...that Grace, hard at work to transform her backyard into a garden paradise, has been collaborating a bit more closely that necessary with her ruggedly handsome landscape architect;

...that Grace's husband, successful island real estate developer "Fast Eddie" Pancik, has embarked on quite an unusual side project;

...that the storybook romance between Madeline's son, Brick, and Grace's daughter Allegra is on the rocks, heading for disaster.

As the gossip escalates, and they face the possible loss of the happy lives they've worked so hard to create, Grace and Madeline try mightily to set the record straight--but the truth might be even worse than rumor has it.

Synopsis

A friendship is tested in this irresistible page-turner from New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand.

Nantucket writer Madeline King could not have picked a worse time to have writer's block. Her deadline is looming, her bills are piling up, and inspiration is in short supply. Before she realizes it, Grace is on the verge of a decision that will irrevocably change her life. Could Grace's crisis be Madeline's salvation? As the gossip escalates, and the summer's explosive events come to a head, Grace and Madeline try desperately to set the record straight--but the truth might be even worse than rumor has it.

About the Author

Elin Hilderbrand does her best writing on the beaches of Nantucket, as well as on the charming streets of Beacon Hill in Boston. She has three magical children who beg her not to sing along to the radio or dance in public. The Rumor is her fifteenth novel.

And then she told someone, and then he told someone, and... yes, that's the way gossip spreads like wildfire and gets a life of its own. "The Rumor," delivers exactly what it promises amongst the life of Nantucketers. Madeline and Grace are best friends forever and their friendship is jeopardized. This is just one of the relatonships that is threatened by inconsiderate gossip. Erin Hilderbrand has done very good justice to a plot surrounding well drawn out characters and the result is a book which reads well. We wish her well so that she may keep writing.

Anther great read by Elin Hilderbrand. There are plenty of juicy tidbits to be found here. As the title suggests it is about rumors with some true and some not. Written in the trademark style we all love, this should be on your summer reading list.
