Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Man's Search for Meaning is like nothing you've ever read before. The first half of the book depicts Dr. Frankl's four years losing everything in concentration camps — a description so hellish, it leaves you desolate. Shattered by his Holocaust experiences, Frankl struggles to survive after he is freed. In the second half of the book, Frankl shows how that period of his life informs and develops his theory of "logotherapy" — he asserts that life is about finding meaning, what is meaningful to each individual. As excruciating as his experiences are, Frankl's theory is full of love; he is able to find redemption for himself and others. This book is beautifully life-changing. Publisher Comments

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory — known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning") — holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

At the time of Frankl's death in 1997, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey for the Library of Congress that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found Man's Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America.

Beacon Press, the original English-language publisher of Man's Search for Meaning, is issuing this new paperback edition with a new Foreword, biographical Afterword, jacket, price, and classroom materials to reach new generations of readers.

Synopsis

Based on his experiences in Nazi death camps, including Auschwitz, from 1942 to 1945, Frankl's timeless memoir and meditation on finding meaning in the midst of suffering argues that man cannot avoid suffering but can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

This is probably one of the best books I've ever read. I make it a point of reading it every year or so! 2012 was no exception! I've had the same book since the early 1970's and it's message is as relevant today as when it was written. It is meaningful on numerous levels: spiritually, personally, mentally. The author, Dr. Frankl, wrote it based on his life in several Nazi prison camps during World War 11. He spent time in Auschwitz and Dachau. A few years ago my husband and I visited Dachau which is outside of Munich. What a sobering visit that was! To be standing in the place where such atrocities took place and to know that he was one of many thousands who lived and died there was moving. This is a "mjust read" book for all generations!

This is an amazing, potentially life changing, book. I think it should be required reading in schools today, given the nature of our current society, where so many people suffer from feelings of emptiness and are unable to formulate what their purpose in life is. This is the perfect antidote to materialism. I am advising everyone I care about to read this wonderful little book.
