The #1 New York Times bestseller — as well as a New York Times Book Review Best Book of 2011 — an “extraordinary” (USA TODAY) novel by Stephen King about a man who travels back in time to prevent the JFK assassination.

It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away — a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life — like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963 — turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession — to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small Texas town where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Synopsis

WINNER OF THE 2012 LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE

Dallas, 11/22/63: Three shots ring out.

President John F. Kennedy is dead.

Life can turn on a dime — or stumble into the extraordinary, as it does for Jake Epping, a high school English teacher in a Maine town. While grading essays by his GED students, Jake reads a gruesome, enthralling piece penned by janitor Harry Dunning: fifty years ago, Harry somehow survived his fathers sledgehammer slaughter of his entire family. Jake is blown away... but an even more bizarre secret comes to light when Jake's friend Al, owner of the local diner, enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession — to prevent the Kennedy assassination. How? By stepping through a portal in the diners storeroom, and into the era of Ike and Elvis, of big American cars, sock hops, and cigarette smoke.... Finding himself in warmhearted Jodie, Texas, Jake begins a new life. But all turns in the road lead to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald. The course of history is about to be rewritten... and become heart-stoppingly suspenseful.

In Stephen King's “most ambitious and accomplished” (NPR) novel, time travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

A Stephen King novel is always a treat. This one had an interesting theory to what if things were different for us that fateful American day. However, the results weren't always as good as they may have sounded.

My favorite book of 2012! It's been years since I've read anything by Stephen King, and then it was mostly horror stories that fueled teen summers. I'd forgotten: he can tell a great story. Wholly absorbing, rich in details, immediately compelling. I was sad to see it end.

This is an excellent departure for Mr. King. I was in grade school when John Kennedy was assassinated and can still remember with vividness the shock and sadness of the nation. Everyone knew that our lives and the path of this nation would never be the same. How many of us would jump at the opportunity to go back in time if we could alter that one single event. Of course things are seldom what they seem and changing the path of our collective future in such a critical way may be both astounding and frightening. Mr. King takes the reader on quite an enjoyable journey as the pages of his story unfold. The characters are multidimensional yet easy to relate to. Definitely a must read for anyone interested in time travel, politics, history, or the simple complexity of a novel that is too good to put down. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Not, I think, a "typical Stephen King book." Suspense and intrigue, but also a surprisingly sweet romance and portrayal of American life in a small town, 50s and 60s style. A total page turner.

It grabs you right away and doesn't let go until the end. I couldn't put it down once I started it. I really got wrapped up in the story. I liked the ending especially.

Wow! This book was so engaging on many levels. As a person who was born post 1963, the Kennedy Assassination and it's historical significance has always interested me. The main character is so likable and Stephen King does a phenomenal job with the time travel components. Best book of 2012 from a very prolific reader!!

A big, juicy feast of a book containing all the elements of a page-turner, but with literary merit.

4.5 stars. The conventional wisdom is that the love story carries this book, but I didn't think so. The half star deduction was for our hero's screamingly dull love interest and some draggy parts in the middle where he bounced back and forth between bird dogging Lee Harvey and puttin' on a talent show. Twice. What I loved was going back to the late 50s/early 60s with a 2012 sensibility. It was irresistible to drive around in a '54 Ford Sunliner convertible with no seat belts, no one else on the road and Buddy Holly on the radio. With a handy portal so I could get back to my family, 21st century medicine, gender and racial advances and my computer, I'd go too. I knew what was coming, the book had to end the way it did, so I wasn't at all disappointed, but don't expect to learn anything new or profound about the assassination. King is 99% sure about how it happened and doesn't waste a lot of time considering other theories. It made no difference to me, though. The book really isn't about who killed JFK, but about memory, free will, inevitability and love. The kids from "It" were a nice touch, too. All in all, good job, Steve.

This book is not just a mediation on time travel. It has adventure, suspense, mystery, romance and history all rolled up in one story. Of all the Stephen King books I've read - this is definitely my favorite!

I'm not normally a Stephen King follower, but after two people highly recommended this title to me, I had to check it out of the library and at least start reading it. I figured if it was weird, gory, scary, demented, whatever...I would just stop reading and return it. Well, I couldn't stop reading it!!! A most excellent read...time travel...clearly about the Kennedy event, among others...I highly recommend this book to others who do not normally read Stephen King. Excellent book!

From the first page, Stephen King takes your attention in a stranglehold and doesn't let go. An added bonus is the walk down memory lane for those of us who remember the 60's. Read the afterword as Stephen King credits his son, Joe Hill, with a great idea for the ending.
