Synopses & Reviews
From serious social commentary to outrageous camp, American and British films have gone to Africa, either in spirit or reality, to find the treasures that lie there. More than 400 movies have been made about (or in) Africa, from the earliest Edison films to the present. They range from endless B-pictures to the ever-popular animal and safari docudrama. Together, these films make a fascinating montage of American and European projections.
A central theme in Africa on Film is racism. But there is much more as well: classism, sexism, nationalism, imperialism, pan-Africanism. Through it all, in a very fluid and engaging style, Cameron shows the mixed legacy of films on Africa.
