Alaskan Hermits (cookies)
½ cup margarine, 1/2 teaspoon cloves, ½ cup sugar, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon mace, 2 well-beaten eggs, ¼ cup raisins, ½ cup molasses, ¼ cup dried wild currants or serviceberries, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 3 teaspoons finely cut, candied orange peel,1 teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon cream of tartar, ½ cup nuts (more if desired).
Cream together margarine and sugar; add salt, eggs and molasses and beat well. Combine 1 ¾ cups flour, the baking powder and spices and sift; add to the first mixture. Mix the raisins, berries, orange peel and nuts; sprinkle with ¼ cup flour and toss to coat ingredients. Add to first mixture. Drop batter from a teaspoon onto oiled cookie sheets. The batter should be quite thin, spreading out well on the pans - leave about 2 inches of space between each. Bake in a 350o oven for 15 minutes, or until cookies are firm.
