Synopses & Reviews
Synopsis
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) recently approved subspecialty certification in Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology (ACA) by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) with the first exam being held in December 2023.
Current cardiac anesthesiologists will have a 6-year grace period during which they will need to pass the exam to continue providing anesthesiology care to cardiac patients (approximately 5,000 specialists over this time period).
Per Dr. Kaplan, the exam is being written using information published in Kaplan's Cardiac Anesthesiology, 7e as a reference source. This provides a unique opportunity for Elsevier to expand the Kaplan family of products to include a companion review product.
- TOC will mirror Kaplan's Cardiac Anesthesia, 7e (without the non-cardiac section) as the 8e is just wrapping development and the bulk of the editorial work for the Review title will be completed this summer.
- Structured chapters will begin with an outline-style format highlighting must-know topics followed by multiple-choice questions with answers and rationales explaining the correct vs incorrect answers.
- Expansion of Kaplan's family of products - likely to see an uptick in sales of the big book as well as the Essentials text in early 2023 for those planning to take the exam the first year it is offered. Release of the Review title provides additional opportunities to cross-promote / up-sell.
