Two of the Vanity's crew were keeping watch alone when the governor's men stormed aboard. Those two, the legend-inspiring pirate queens Anne Bonney and Mary Reade, bravely engaged the sailors in battle but called in vain for the rest of their crew, who sported and drank below.
