Synopses & Reviews
Montana is alive with things that go bump in the Big Sky night. A World War II serviceman who lingers in a Billings business, a dearly departed priest who still hitchhikes around Helena, and a Hamilton socialite who adorns her mansion with the scent of rosesthese are a few of the creepy tales collected across the state in
Beyond Spirit Tailings. Passed down through generations, these spirit tailings” illustrate the subtle presence of the past in the everyday lives of modern Montanans. Richly embroidered with Montanas unique historical legacy, these eerie and mysterious tales will leave you looking over your shoulder, sleeping with the lights on, and always craving more.
In this new and exciting twist, Ellens ever-popular historical ghost stories found an enthusiastic reader in world-famous composer and musician Philip Aaberg. Inspired by her stories, he encouraged Ellen to produce an audio version of Beyond Spirit Tailings to which he could add his music. Often, the history we learn from textbooks seems impersonal and leaves us out of its inexorable and compelling flow. However, we all know that a sound or a smell can trigger vivid memories. Ellen and Philips spooky collaboration will evoke those places and images that make our imagination such a wonderful (and sometimes unearthly) destination.
Synopsis
In
Beyond Spirit Tailings, Ellen Baumler will take you across Montana with stories of the unexplained. Ellen came across these ghostly and mysterious tales in her work as interpretive historian at the Montana Historical Society. As she traveled the state researching historic houses and other properties over the years, Ellen heard stories that werent necessarily the king of thing one puts on historic signs. The creation of
Beyond Spirit Tailings depended on those who contributed their stories, their expertise, and their enthusiasm for a subject that is sometimes controversial. The collaboration of Ellens storytelling and Philips haunting music will keep you at the edge of your seat.
Since these stories cover everything from prehistory” to the advent of satellite TV, so does the music. While it would be pretty easy to scare people with sound, most of the time Philip went the other way. In fact, it is the undisputable reality of the people in these stories that touched Philip. Some of the characters are as dark and frightening as any modern headline. Some are like us, full of loving attachment to the earth. In the end, they might well be ghosts, for their spirits live on in these recordings.
