About the Author
Howard Schatz is the world's preeminent photographer of the human body. Body Knots is his most recent in a stunning series of best-selling work and broadens the eye-stopping range of images to come from this trailblazer's camera. Rich in humor and playful in its elegance of form, Body Knots breaks new ground with an arresting new way of viewing the world. In 1998, three years after the publication of WaterDance, the ground-breaking book of images of dancers all made under water, Schatz completed work on Pool Light, a body of work which marked a whole new phase in the evolution of his unique photographic appreciation of the human form in and on the water. Passion & Line, published in 1997, is a collection of images of movement, physical intensity, and passion that was made with the collaboration of the greatest dancers in the United States. Other books include: BodyType: An Intimate Alphabet, an alphabet created under water by two dancers. In 1996, his study of newborn infants, called Newborn, was published to great acclaim both in the United States and internationally. Schatz's first book, Gifted Women, celebrates the lives and accomplishments of fifty
American women who are known nationally and internationally for their accomplishments. His second book, Seeing Red: The Rapture of Redheads, has enjoyed remarkable success in the world of photography. The exhibition of his third book, Homeless: Portraits of Americans in Hard Times, traveled the United States and Europe in a four-year tour of seventeen cities in the United States and abroad. All of these books are the result of unique collaboration of the talents of photographer Howard Schatz and project director and editor, Beverly Ornstein.
