Commissar Ciaphas Cain, hero of the Imperium, respected by his peers and an inspiration to his men - at least that's what the distorting lens of history would have you believe. The reality is very different as Cain is simply looking for an easy life. When he and his regiment of Valhallan guardsmen are deployed to the ice world of Frigidia, Cain's quest for a quiet life is suddenly interrupted as unrest breaks out amongst the mine workers. There are rumours of evil in this insignificant backwater mining colony and Cain is nominated to investigate mysterious events down in the mines. Unbeknownst to him, the planet is right in the path of a major ork incursion and as the savage greenskins attack, a malevolent evil begins to stir deep in the ice caves.
