Presents the extraordinary works in first gallery in the United Kingdom to be devoted permanently to the display of Chinese paintings. Works span the period of the Ming (1368-1644) and earlier part of Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. Most, however, are 19th and 20th century paintings. Pieces range from the strict classical tradition to early modern art. Artists are listed alphabetically and their alternative names (zi and hao) appear, as well. Inscriptions are also reproduced in Chinese characters. Biographical information and background on the artists enhance the experience of seeing these masterpieces. (Ashmolean Museum)
