Review
"For a little more than a decade, from the Versailles Peace Settlement to Hitler's accession to power in January 1933, Berlin was Sodom and Gomorrah, Camelot, Paris, Vienna—all the good and sinful places rolled into one. It inspired Christopher Isherwood and Bertolt Brecht, Marlene Dietrich and Kurt Tucholsky, a whole raft of outstanding scientists. Tellingly, it was Hitler's least favorite city in Germany precisely because it was so open, so gay, so intellectually alive. Anton Gill sketches a beautiful portrait of the glory that was Berlin in the 1920's." Reviewed by Daniel Weiss, Virginia Quarterly Review (Copyright 2006 Virginia Quarterly Review)
