Le Figaro menait une violente campagne contre M. Caillaux, ministre des finances, et sa politique fiscale. Il l'accusait, notamment, d'avoir entrave le cours regulier de la justice pour servir l'escroc Rochette. Une note du procureur general Fabre en faisait foi, disait-il.
Le 16 mars, Mme Caillaux vint aux bureaux du Figaro et tua a coups de revolver le directeur du journal, Gaston Calmette.
