Synopsis
In 1838, Scottish artist David Roberts embarked on a journey to the Middle East. Earlier in the nineteenth century, scholars in the emerging science of archaeology had begun to explore the ancient region. But to travel there was still a difficult, dangerous undertaking, and to the European mind, the East remained as much a land of fable as of fact.
Roberts toured Egypt and Palestine, returning with a portfolio of astonishing drawings. Published as a series of lavish, hand-tinted lithographs, his work created a new European vision of the Orient.
Beautifully presented and accessibly priced, with 64 color reproductions and lucid, lively text, this book evokes the historic moment when West and Middle East discovered one another.
