Caroline, a minister's daughter, endures a difficult relationship with an older, jealous sister and a mother who show her little affection or love. Caroline and her father, however, form a special bond of love and understanding. He guides her through teenage years and college, while serviing as a Navy Chaplain in World War II. Caroline falls in love with a Pre-Med student, postpones her nursing career, and starts a family, She soon finds her husband is an atheist. A second marriage to a Roman Catholic, and then a third marriage to a Jewish gentlemen, all cause her marital conflicts.
