Der 1934 von Eugen Claassen und Henry Goverts gegr ndete H. Goverts Verlag konnte, anders als andere Verlage b rgerlich-liberaler Provenienz, bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges fortbestehen und erhielt bereits im Oktober 1945 von der Britischen Milit rregierung die Lizenz zur Weiterarbeit. Die Studie zeigt verlagsinterne Entscheidungsprozesse auf und stellt dar, unter welchen Bedingungen und wie weit es einem Kleinverlag m glich war, Handlungsspielr ume unter der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur zu nutzen.

Auf dem weiten Weg vom "Autor zum Leser," wie es Herbert G. Gopfert formulierte, liegen thematische Stationen wie die des Schriftstellers in seinem sozialen Umfeld, die Buchgestaltung, Herstellungs- und Vertriebsformen, das Sammeln in Bibliotheken und Lesezirkeln.
